1999 august 20ice ice babydid you see this?* it is times like this i wish i were ungodly rich. i'd hire myself a giant yacht, complete with crew and cook and all the latest in satellite technology and then i'd take that boat down to the antarctic and i'd find myself that iceberg. the size of rhode island! towering three hundred feet above sea level! can you imagine the sheer beauty of that? all the millions of shades of ice blue and white, the sun bouncing off the crevices and cracks and canyons, the waterfalls that must be pouring off it as it starts to melt. and the sound, it would be making sounds too as large chunks calved off to live their short lives on their own. the waterfalls would splash too, trickling and crashing on their way to the ocean, but i imagine the berg itself would move silently through the ocean. some small waves crashing on its icy shores, but silent. and potentially deadly. i wonder how much effect it has on the ecosystem as it passes through. whether fish swim through its wake and shudder, "brrrrr! damn it's cold all of a sudden. and what's with the fresh water?" i'll take mine iced, please, claire *if the link doesn't work, let me know; i saved a copy to my local home - < previous < - > next > - archives |
