1999 august 19turn for the worsei was supposed to be at a dinner party right about now. jerry and joy invited us over for a casual barbecue with doctor d, his wife, and his parents, a. and s. ted's death is still fresh enough in all our minds that we feel the need to gather on major anniversaries of his life, and death, just for the comfort. we don't usually talk much about him, it is enough just to be together, knowing we were the ones he loved the most in the world. i haven't seen s. in a while, but i've been getting regular updates about her treatments and the progression and regression of the brain tumour. up until this week, things were looking pretty good, but it now appears we all may have been too optimistic. she had her monthly mri and while it showed the primary tumour had indeed become smaller, several new tumours have popped up and seem to be growing at a rapid pace. they're not throwing in the towel quite yet--she is scheduled for yet another round of radiation and chemo--but it was a blow to all of us who have been hoping and praying for a miracle. last night a. had to rush her to the emergency room when she couldn't stop vomiting. she spent the night hooked up to all manner of ivs and being poked and prodded and scanned, and while she is home again this afternoon, it is no wonder she doesn't feel much like making small talk in the sun while smelling salmon on the grill. it rather took the wind out of all our sails and we decided to just call the whole thing off. a very childish reaction, but understandable. i had made a fabulous dessert to take over: a three layer chocolate explosion of calories. the bottom layer is chocolate melted together with cream and then mixed with toasted almonds. the middle layer is a dense chocolate mousse that is more the consistency of the inside of a godiva truffle. the top layer is a chocolate whipped cream. i even had fresh raspberries to decorate it with. not so hungry after all, claire
