What your Nth Grader Needs to Know

Description:

This series is officially entitled the "Core Knowledge Series". This book written for parents to read to their children or the child to read for himself. It written for the child at their level. It is in story format and is divided into topics. It is available in most bookstores and even at some wholesale clubs. This book alone can help people who are "afterschooling" and looking for ideas.

Ideas on Implementation?

In general these books are divided into quick easy reads that can be used over a period of time. Most children enjoy the "story" like feel of the book. Just reading through the books acts as a good review of subjects previously learned or after a long break.

The easiest way to use these books is to set aside time and read them with your child or have them read it. When more information is desired a trip to the library can be used to add more to the topic.

These books are also great "intro's" to a subject. Use them the first day of a course of study to give a general idea of the topic. While discussing the topic you can learn what areas your child wants to focus on or what areas are lacking.

Another use for the books is if your child is starting in the later grades. These books can be used to summarize and set the foundation for the higher grade and fill in any gaps. (Most public schools do not focus on World History or other cultures until later grades so the NTK books are great!)

Disadvantages:

These books are not complete curriculums in themselves. Many topics are just brief descriptions and will need to be supplemented. Some children may not like the story format.
