| In 1979,Fred started studing with actress and acting coach Nina Foch. Fred Dryer-"I was a player and enjoyed doing that but my life's work was not to be a football coach,owner or broadcasting football games.I was always fascinated with acting.I liked films.I was curious about it-why people act,why they don't.What makes a good actor.Then I got into it and realized,I think I want to do it." (The Toronto Star,4/9/1989) With the movies Gus and Prime Time,he got his Screen Actors Guild card.The Star Maker was his first important role,as Melanie Griffiths stepfather. Fred Dryer-"I did good work in the Starmaker and got a lot of positive feedback.I'm one of those people who will work harder if you compliment and encourage him."(The San Diego Union tribune) In 1982,he tried out for Cheers,one of three finalists.He lost the male lead to Ted Danson.Later,he made several guest appearances as Dave Richards,Sam's former Boston Red Sox teammate turned sportcaster. 1982,Fred got married to actress and playboy centerfold Tracy Vaccaro.His daughter Caitlin Nell Dryer was born April 12,1984.Fred and Tracy split up in 1986 and then divorced in 1988. In 1984,Fred was picked to play LAPD Sergent Rick Hunter of the TV series Hunter.A mobster's son turned cop.Hunter,created by Frank Lupo and produced by Stephen J.Cannell is TV's version of Clint Eastwoods Dirty Harry.Hunter's partner was Sergent DeeDee McCall,known around the squadroom as the Brass Cupcake,played by Stepfanie Kramer.Hunter ran on NBC from 1984 to 1991. Fred Dryer-"It hits a theme that people all seem to understand.The characters Hunter and McCall have old-line values:honesty,integrity.They are after the right answers to problems and the way they go about their jobs is very admirable.They are human beings.They aren't automatons.Or maybe it's just that they think I'm cute.Maybe they think Stepfanie is beautiful.It's hard to put your finger on exactly why the show is so strong".(LA Times,3/15/1990) Besides running in the USA,Hunter was sold to 88 other countries of which in many places is still running to this day .Fred-"It really makes you feel good about yourself to be loved by a race of people.It makes you feel appreciated" A couple of the cars that was driven by Fred in Hunter:The famous Huntermobile,1976 Dodge Monaco,Green with tan interior.Last episode'Deadly Encounters' Also a 1990 Ford Crown Victoria LTD, skyblue with dk blue interior.First episode 'Where Echoes'.Last episode'Little Man With a Big Reputation'. After Hunter,Through his own company 'Fred Dryer Productions' ,The Return of Hunter was born.Also produced and stared in Land's End.Since Land's End,he has been making movies and guest appearances on TV shows.He has produced his latest film 'Highway 395'.He directed and stared in this movie.
