UNION VETERANS COLOR GUARD
of Austin and Central Texas
(aka) Civil War Medal of Honor Color Guard
Welcome!!
We are an Austin, Texas based Civil War reenacting unit depicting and honoring the
Civil War Color Guards of the Union Army, and in particular those who won the
Medal of Honor.
We focus on the typical Western theater volunteer regiments that fought in places such as Wilson's Creek, MO, Shiloh, TN, Perryville, KY, Prairie Grove, AR, Vicksburg, MS, Chickamauga, GA, Olustee, FL,
Pleasant Hill, LA, Honey Hill, SC,  Bentonville, NC
and Spanish Fort, AL.
Color Guard at Veterans Day 2004
Left:The position of Color Guard was the most honored & dangerous job in the Regiment.
The music you hear is "THE VACANT CHAIR"  appearing around Thanksgiving, 1861 in honor of Lt. John William Grout of Company D of the 15th Massachusetts Infantry Regt. who died at the Battle of Balls Bluff, Virginia on Oct 21, 1861.  He was 18 years old.  This song was embraced by both the North and South and came to represent all the sorrow suffered by families on both sides. This site honors those men and their families. It is our humble privilage to attempt to portray them to our modern society.
During the Civil War (April 1861 to May 1865) over 80 Medals of Honor were awarded to members of the Color Guard for extraordinary heroism in battle!!
See "Dress on the Colors"-Click here
Army Medal of Honor-Present Day
Army Medal of Honor-Civil War
Our primary impression is a Full Dress Union Color Guard for parades, ceremonies and memorial events in the central Texas area.
For the field oriented members, our secondary impression is a Campaign style Volunteer Regimental Color Guard where we would join a designated Color Company for reenactments. We portray the "8th US Infantry Regt (Regulars)" for the Gen Twiggs Surrender Reenactment at the Alamo in San Antonio & the "94 Illinois Volunteer Regt" for the Juneteenth Parade in Austin.
Members are also available to offer technical advice to film, video & stage productions as well as participate as actors & extras.  Several of our members have experience in film, theater and video.  We also do programs for civic & school groups.
Veterans & newly enlisted men in Mr. Lincoln's Army  are needed!

BELLMEADE, TX REENACTMENT-May 14-16, 2004
Right: Combat was horrific on the Color Guards of both armies.  ColorCpl Bill Montgomery of the 76th Ohio Infantry was the only survior of his 7 man color guard at the Battle of Ringgold Gap, GA, Nov 27, 1863.
A Confederate cannon shell ripped off his right arm as he was carrying the  National Color. The other six guards were killed one after another as they tried to protect the flags, even though he Regimental (state) flag was captured.  See story under Links of Interest above for the return of the State flag.
Our National flag is the Philadelphia Depot style, 34 stars in double oval pattern with 2" gold fringe w/ blue & white infantry tassel.  Most units carried both a National & Regimental (or state) flag. We  ordered it from Gideon Flags See Gideon Flags here.
