- Military Service:
- On August 19, 1861, James ADAMS enlisted as a Private in
Company C, 3rd Kentucky Infantry under the command of Captain
James H. McNeill at London, Kentucky. He was mustered into service
on September 22, 1861 at Camp Dick Robinson. James was present
and remained with his company and regiment until October 24, 1862 when
he was left in the hospital at Gallipolis. He later rejoined his company
and regiment in January or February 1863 and was present until August 8, 1863
when he received a sick furlough. James rejoined his company and
regiment in November or December 1863.
On February 29, 1864, James was discharged by virtue of his
re-enlistment as a Veteran Volunteer. On December 24, 1864,
per Special Order No. 96, Head Quarters District of Baton Rouge and Port
Hudson, Louisiana, James was transferred to Company D, 7th
Kentucky Veteran Infantry. He was present with his
company and regiment until he was mustered out on March 11, 1866
at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
James applied for a pension based on the disabilities he received during his
service in the United States. His widow, Nannie "Annie" ADAMS, applied for a
Widow's Pension and was rejected on the ground that she was not the legal
widow of James ADAMS due to the fact that at the date of her attempted marriage
to him she had a lawful husband, Luther WARREN, from whom she had not been
divorced and who was still living in 1918. William J. ADAMS, son of James ADAMS
and Julia "Jaley" MOORE, was given custody of Zachariah ADAMS, son of James
ADAMS and Nannie "Annie" WARREN, on October 11, 1918 in Laurel County, Kentucky.
On November 27, 1918, William J. ADAMS filed for a Minor's pension for
Zachariah ADAMS, but was rejected on July 17, 1919 on the grounds that Zachariah
was not the legitimate child of James ADAMS and that James was not lawfully married to
the child's mother.
