One of the first Union regiments recruited in the state of Kentucky,
the 7th Kentucky Infantry was organized under the command
of Colonel Theophilus T. Garrard, a state Senator and Mexican War
veteran. The 7th Kentucky Infantry, which was originally designated the
3rd Kentucky Infantry and later changed to the 7th Kentucky Infantry, was
mustered in on September 22, 1861 at
Camp
Dick Robinson for a period of three years. During
its term of service, the Regiment participated in the following known
engagements:
Camp Wildcat |
Richmond |
Cumberland Gap |
Chickasaw Bluff |
Perryville |
Champion's Hill |
Arkansas Post |
Vicksburg |
Black River Bridge |
Sabine Cross Roads |
Jackson |
|
The original members of the 7th Kentucky Infantry were mustered
out on October 5, 1864 in Louisville, Kentucky due to expiration
of term in service. On December 24, 1864 in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana, the 7th Kentucky Infantry, consisting of Veterans and
Recruits, was veteranized and consolidated with the 19th and 22nd
Kentucky Infantries to form the 7th Kentucky Veteran Infantry,
which consisted of four different companies. The 7th Kentucky
Veteran Infantry remained in service until March 11, 1866, when
the regiment was mustered out of service.
