- Grant announced the organization of his army.
Sherman, Hurlbut, McPherson, and McClernand were to be corps commanders.

- General Sherman leaves Memphis with about
100 transports and proceeds down the Mississippi River.

- General Sherman reaches the Yazoo River north of
Vicksburg.
