Deauville

All my Normandy bike routes begin at Deauville, my favorite place to stay on the Normandy coast.

Only 230km from Paris, this beautiful city is a favorite getaway for Parisians during the summer and on weekends all year round.  Many have their summer homes here.  In fact, we are there right now--we rented a nice little villa it's sooooo cute, it looks like a doll house!

Deauville is on the Côte Fleurie--Flowery Coast--of Normandy.  Any visit to the area will show you how it got its name.

Deauville and it's sister city Trouville (No, no, you can be fooled, but Deauville does not have a brother--Trouville is a girl!) are the cradle of impressionist painting. This is where Boudin, mentor of Monet (Rose and Jack in Titanic love Monet), painted his evocative seascapes. (A very emotional man...)

Deauville has something for everyone:  horseback riding (my daughter), roller-blading (my son), relaxing at a cafe "sur les planches" (my husband) and biking (me)!

Deauville is the center of horse trading and racing. August is when all the races take place.  In fact, my daughter and husband recently went to one and lost a  lot of money because they bet on the number 9 because they liked its name but he turned out to be a terrible runner. (No offence, Odessa, it's not your fault we lost 100 francs on you. Don't you feel guilty if we starve to death!)

You can get a free map of the city at the Office de Tourisme, or click here.
