Software Defined Radio

A software-defined radio is a receveing system where the signal is converted in digital and the processing is software.

• a digital conversion close to the antenna.

• wideband ,multiband and multirate;

• the reconfigurability by software;

The software-defined receiver includes:

• analog filter;

• analog-to-digital converter;

• digital downconverter;

• demodulator;

The receiver architecture is based on ADC characteristics (dynamic range, frequency clock jitter)

A digital downconverter is a numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) followed by filter implemented as a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or with a receive signal processor

a digital signal processor perform the demodulation.

Similar concept can refer to transmitting side of the system.

At just 230mW, in a 5mm x 5mm QFN package, the LTC2249 is only half the power of its nearest competitor at this speed, has the smallest package and board size, yet achieves over 73dB SNR up to 100MHz input - better than even higher-powered competitors. The LTC2249 is one of 13 new ADCs introduced today by Linear Technology, as part of its expanding family of low power, high speed ADCs, which range from 10Msps to 170Msps at 12-bit and 10-bit resolution, as well as 14-bit converters up to 80Msps.
