On the 22nd of July 1298 The Scots and English forces met at Falkirk, (a few hundred yards from where this is being typed). On the day the English won the battle, though both sides had to endure a hard battle with huge losses. Amongst the long list of Scotsmen who died on the day was Sir John de Graeme. It is said he elected to remain behind and help guard the retreat from the field of the Scots army, or what was left of it by that time. During this last defence he became outnumbered and so the story goes, was struck through the corslet armour while engaged with another enemy. It is also said that Wallace returned to the field some time later and found the body of his young friend (appx.21) which he carried to Falkirk to be buried in the Church yard, where his grave remains to this day.
" Heir lyes Sir John de Grame baith wight and wise Ane of the chiefs wha rescewet Scotland thris ; Ane better Knight not to the world was lent...."
"Potent in mind and hand and the faithful Achates of Wallace, Graeme is buried here slain in war by the English 22nd July, 1298." |
