Thomas Head (G-G-G-Grand Father)

Born: About 1813.

Died: not known

Thomas’s date of birth is not known but would be have been some time before his christening on 25^th April 1813[3].  His parents were William Head and Mary Middleton who were married at St Mary’s Church in Dover, England on 11 February 1812.

Thomas married his first wife Agnes around 1840 and they had a daughter Mary Head in about 1841.  Unfortunately Agnes died in 1842 at the age of 29.

On 19 February 1943 Thomas married a Jane Pike, based on the age of her first child she would have been born sometime before 1830.

It is known that Thomas and Jane had three children in Dover Kent, England who each immigrated to Australia:

                   i    Thomas Philip Head, TP  was born on 31 August 1844[1] see next section for further details.

                   ii    James Robert Head, James was born in about 1847[2] and died in Brisbane on 10^th January 1931[2] .  He married Elizabeth Harriet Bayley in Ontario, Canada in about 1874[2]  .  They had two children in Ontario, Thomas Philip (born about 1874[2] ) and Lydia Maud (born about 1879[2] ), before immigrating to Australia in about September 1882 on the ship the Cuzco[4].  Their third child, Rosetta Annie, was born in Brisbane on 8^th May 1885[5].

                  iii    Edward Alfred Head, “Ted” was born in about 1862 and died on 4^th February 1933 in the Diamantina Hospital, South Brisbane, Queensland[9].  He immigrated (at the age of 15) to Australia in December 1876 aboard the ship the British Nation into Moreton Bay.  He married Louisa Elizabeth Bryans in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane on 20 January 1887.  They had two children – Myrtle Jane (born 11^th March 1888)[24] and Muriel Elizabeth (born 19 July 1892)[25].

TP, James, and Edward were all buried at the Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane.

It is not known when Thomas or Jane died.  Jane may have remarried and come to Australia after Thomas's death but further research is required.

Thomas Phillip Head (G-G-Grand Father)

Born: Dover, Kent – 31 August 1844

Died: Brisbane, Australia – 19 February 1921

Thomas was born on 31 August 1844 in Dover, Kent, England[1] and On 28 September 1868 he  married Margaret Hair[1] in Woolwich, England.  

Margaret was born on 25 June 1851 in Portsea, Hants, England[3], and died on 26 June 1905 in Musgrave Road, Red Hill, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia[1].  She was the daughter of Francis Hair and Mary McKay[1].  On 21 January 1870, Thomas, Margaret and their young son “Frank” left England on the ship the “Planet” and arrived in Brisbane 95 days later on the 28 April 1870.[6].

Thomas and Margaret had twelve children:

                   i.    FRANCIS HEAD, Francis was born in 28 June 1869 in Woolwich, Kent, England[7].  He died sometime before 1937, overseas, maybe England[8].  On 18 November 1899 he married ELSIE WADE COOMBER at the Residence of Mr Robert Roberts at Royal Terrace, Albion, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia[7].  Elsie was born on 28 December 1879 at Raglan St, Waterloo, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia[10] and died 2 September 1965 at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia[11].

                  ii.    MARY JANE HEAD, Mary was born on 26 June 1871 in Queensland, Australia[12] and married RICHARD SMYTH on 1 May 1894, Queensland, Australia[13].  She died 25 April 1940[14] and was buried in the Toowong Cemetery[15].

                 iii.    EDWARD HEAD, Edward was born on 26 May 1873 in Queensland, Australia[16] and died on ten days later[17].

                 iv.    ALFRED JAMES HEAD, Alfred was born on 14 April 1874 in Queensland, Australia[18] and died on 6 November 1877[19], only three years old.

                  v.    HERBERT HEAD, Herbert was born on 24 November 1878 in Queensland, Australia[20].

                 vi.    ADELAIDE HEAD, Adelaide was born on 12 January 1881 in Queensland, Australia[21] and married George Henry Collins in Queensland on 3 June 1907.  She died on 16 May 1958 and was cremated at the Mount Thompson Crematorium in Brisbane.  George died on 16 May 1945 and was also cremated at Mount Thompson.

                vii.    ARTHUR WELLESLY HEAD, Arthur was born on 15 November 1883 in Queensland, Australia[22] and married RUTH ANTOINETTE MOTTAM on 11 September 1903 in Queensland, Australia[23].  He died on 1 April 1940 and was cremated at Mount Thompson.  Ruth died on 19 June 1966.

               viii.    ELIZABETH LOUISA HEAD, Elizabeth was born on 21 June 1886, at Petrie Terrace, Red Hill, Brisbane[3] and died 8 December 1934, Red Hill, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia[3].  She married ALBERT EDWARD SKUCE on 12 June 1912 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia[3].  Albert was born on 29 January 1889 at Freeman Street, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia[3] and died on 15 October 1963 in the Brisbane General Hospital, Queensland, Australia[3].  They had four children, Albert John, Marion Margarette, Elsie May and Olive.

                  ix.    LOUIS JAMES HEAD, Louis was born on 9 May 1888 in Queensland, Australia[29] and and died in 1969 in Brisbane.  He married Kathleen Thelma Perkins on 7 March 1931 in Brisbane[30].

                   x.    JAMES WILLIAM HEAD, James was born on 4 June 1891 in Queensland, Australia[31] and was killed in action in France during the First World War[32].

                  xi.    JOHN EDMOND HEAD, John was born on 7 November 1892 in Queensland, Australia[33] and died on 30 October 1974[33] .  He married OLIVE LOUISE PEARSON who died on 14 September 1941[33].  John and Olive were buried at the Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia[33].

                 xii.    HELEN HEAD, Helen was born on 8 May 1895 in Queensland, Australia[37].

Thomas worked as a Bricklayer[1] in England and continued in Australia until about 1904.  He is remembered by his great grand daughter (Beverley Mann) as a Grocer at Red Hill[8]. 

Margaret died the day after her 54^th Birth on the 26 June 1905 at Musgrave Road, Red Hill, Brisbane from “Mitral disease, Dropsy and Exhaustion”[38].  She was buried at the Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane.  Thomas died several years later from Apoplexy, hemiplegia, heart failure on the 19 February 1921 at his home in Musgrave Road, Red Hill, Brisbane, Queensland[1] and was buried at Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane (Portion 5 Section 100 Allotment 21)[32].

Francis Head (G-Grand Father)

Born: Woolwich, Kent, England – 28 June 1869

Died: Unknown – Before 1937

Francis was born on 28 June 1869 in Woolwich, Kent, England[7] and immigrated to Queensland on the 21 January 1870 on the ship Planet[6].

 On 18 November 1899 he married ELSIE WADE COOMBER  at the Residence of Mr Robert Roberts at Royal Terrace, Albion, Brisbane[7].  Elsie was the daughter of JAMES COOMBER and SELINA NAIRN, for more details see Elsie Wade Coomber .

 At the time of his marriage he was recorded as a Grocer living at Petrie Terrace, Brisbane[7].

 Francis and Elsie had three children:

                   i.    ALICE MAY HEAD, Alice was born on 17 April 1900 at Walter St, Red Hill, Brisbane[13] and died on 3 June 1983 at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Brisbane[39].  She married WALTER JOSEPH HULL on 8 April 1933 at Wickham Terrace, Brisbane[40].

                  ii.    THOMAS EDWARD HEAD, Tom was born on 30 October 1902 in Brisbane, Queensland[13] and died about July 1976 in Brisbane[41].  He married EDNA MAY TILT on 8 June 1929 in Queensland.  She was born about 1909[42] and died in June 1977[42].   Tom and Edna were both buried in the Pinnaroo Cemetery, Brisbane[41].

                 iii.    GLADYS MURIEL HEAD, Gladys was born on 22 January 1905 in Queensland[13] and died only six months later on 3 July 1905 in Queensland[13].  She was buried at the South Brisbane Cemetery, Brisbane[42].

 Francis left his wife and died in England sometime before 1937.  After his death he left a large sum of money, this was advertised in newspapers and was eventually sent to his wife Elsie[8].

Alice May Head (Grand Mother)

Born: Red Hill, Brisbane, Australia – 17 April 1900

Died: Brisbane, Australia – 3 June 1983

Alice was born on 17 April 1900 at Walter St, Red Hill, Brisbane[13].  Alice and her brother Tom spent some time with a Mrs Jaques (a home) at Wellington Point[8].

On 8 April 1933 she married WALTER JOSEPH HULL at Wickham Terrace[40], he was the son of FREDERICK HULL and CATHERINE HOLMES.  For more detail on Alice and Walter see descendants of Walter Hull (page 24)

Alice died (from (a) Congestive Cardiac failure (b) Bronchopneumonia (c) Bronchiectasis) on 3 June 1983 in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Brisbane and was buried at the Hemmant Cemetery, Brisbane[43].
