Little in known of Joseph Hull except that he married Mary Spleving.

Joseph and Mary had a son Frederick John Hull.

Frederick John Hull (Great-Grand Father)

Born: England - about 1859

Died: Queensland, Australia – 27 August 1944

Frederick John Hull was born in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England in about 1859[1].  He married his first wife Rosina Desbrow at the District Church of St. Paul Bow Common, County of Middlesex, England on 18 February 1879[2].  Rosina was born in about 1859 and was the daughter of Joseph Desbrow and Roseana Fuller[3].  She died on 15 August  1899 in Brisbane[4].

 They had four children[1]: Violet Ethel May Hull, Albert Stanley Hull, Maud Hull and another child who died young.  Violet was born in about 1887[1] and Albert about 1890[1], as no record of their birth has been found in Australia, it is assumed that they were born overseas.

Frederick is said to have left his birthplace of England and spent some time in Canada before arriving in Australia in about 1901[1].  It is not known when Rose came to Australia.

On 28 March 1902 Frederick married his second wife Catherine Holmes at the residence of Mr Arthur Tully, Kennedy Terrace, Brisbane[5].   For Catherine’s history see William Holmes (Page 26).  They lived for a time at Red Hill before moving to a house at Mayfield Road, Belmont.

Frederick and Catherine had two children: Walter (Wally) Joseph Hull[1] and Lily (Lillian) Evelyn Hull[1].  Walter was born at Red Hill, Brisbane on 20 August 1904 and Lily was born in Brisbane on 17 June 1905. 

Lily is said to have had a fall while playing on a building site a Red Hill[6] when she was young.  This may have led to her death several years later at the age of only 21.  She died on 9 April 1926 at the Goodna Mental Hospital from Epilepsy, which she had suffered from for at least two years[7], and was buried at the Toowong Cemetery.  Her mother was later buried in the same grave.

During his time in Canada and Queensland Frederick worked as an Engineer for the Railways and Tramways.  On 27 August 1944, Frederick died from “Senile Myocarditis with failure” and was also buried at the Toowong Cemetery[1]

Walter Joseph Hull (Grand Father)

Born: Brisbane, Australia – 20 August 1904.

Died: Brisbane, Australia – 13 February 1990.

Walter Joseph (Wally) Hull was born at Red Hill in Brisbane on 20 August 1904[12].  Walter went to Ithaca Creek State School before becoming an apprentice boot maker.  He ran a bootmakers shop first from Barrack Rd, Cannon hill (near Rail Station) later moving to Wynnum Rd, Cannon Hill (near the post office)

Wally and his father built the shop in Wynnum road on land leased from the owner, a Mr Grieg.  Despite several offers Mr Grieg would not sell the land, preferring to retain it for his daughter who had Married and moved to America.

Walter once owned a block of land (next to his parents’ house) at Belmont before he sold it to the Education Department to build the Mayfield Road State School.

On the 8 April 1933 he married Alice May Head at Wickham Terrace, Brisbane[8].  Alice was the daughter of Francis Head and Elsie Coomber.  For Alice’s history see Francis Head (Page 30).

Walter and Alice built a house at 100 Bilyana St, Bulimba.  The house was designed to be similar to a house they had lived in at Camp Hill.

Walter died on 13 February 1990 from Acute myocardial infarct, Coronary atherosclerosis[9].  He was cremated at the Mt Thompson Crematorium and buried at the Hemmant Cemetery.
