| Awaiting picture of Quoobra |
| Born to a poor pig farmer, in a small fief on the southern coast of the Black Sea, Quoobra learned the lessons of poverty from a very young age. Up until the day he was taken to town to be given as tribute to the Sultan, there was little which stood out aside from the gnawing pangs of hunger.
The day would always stand out in his mind for two reasons. The enormous building which they brought him and the other children to seemed to hold a veritable feast of foods inside, and he filled his belly for the first time he could remember. As the collection of peculiar men who seemed to run the place informed them that they were now considered Azab and would be little more than arrow fodder for the main body of the Sultan's army if they did not pay attention and work hard at the training they were offered, an amazing thing occurred. He first saw her enormous eyes through the cloth of her robes which softened as she saw to the needs of the children. She was the nurse maid, friend, and closest thing to a mother many of them had ever known. Jemi was an amazing flower among the pain and horror which was his world now. The men would trained the Azab were effective veterans, criminals, thieves, and murderers. There were no real leaders among them for to lead was to be killed. The bashi-bazouk took pride in having no leadership. In this unusually dangerous chaotic world, Quoobra seemed to thrive. The lessons of the criminals and warriors alike he seemed to absorb like a sponge. He was not the strongest, nor the smartest, but he was a good listener, and he proved himself to be an excellent scout many times over. In the cruel violent battles which seemed to be his training ground Quoobra became as ruthless as any killer around him. His heart seemed hardened to all opponents, and he spared no prisoners so there were none to fight a second time. In all things except one he seemed as one with his fellow soldiers. When it came to the Maid who cared for the new ones, Quoobra found he was not as ruthless as he thought himself. On nights when they were stationed at the barracks he would sneak back by the room for the new ones to gaze at her. He never knew for certain if she was aware he was even there. One night a raider attacked her as she left the new one's room. Quoobra didn't even realize it was one of his fellow soldiers until the head was looking up at him from the floor. As Jemi screamed he slit her throat, it broke his heart but it was all he could think of to do. He scaled the wall and escaped into the darkness. |
