This opera is based on the popular ancient novel "Notes from the Western Chamber", which was written by the well-known dramatist Wan Shipu of the Yuan Dynasty. The Chinese opera Xun school master - Xun Huisheng later adapted the opera into its present form.
The Synopsis:
A young scholar Zhang Junrui ran across a young lady Cui Yingying in the garden of Puijiu Temple. So enchanted by Cui's bearty, Zhang moved into the temple.
One day an evil warlord Sun Feihu invaded the Temple to capture Lady Cui and to force her into marriage. In despair Mrs. Cui pledged to give her daughter away to any man who can come forward for the rescue. Zhang took this opportunity and pleaded help from his long time friend - General Baima(White Hourse). However, as soon as General Baima defeated the evil warlord, Mrs. Cui broke her promise and forbade Zhang and Lady Cui seeing each other.
Yingying's maid - Hong Niang was raged by this injustice. She arranged secret dates and letter exchanges between the two lovers. Even upon Mrs. Cui's interogations after the discovery of the secret meetings, Hong Niang was able to use her wits to convince Mrs. Cui to give into the situation and allow the two to tie the knot.
