5) 1970-1984 –
CHUNG LING FIRST AID CORPS
Since
that day of
withdrawal from Malaysian Red Cross unit, the ex-leaders never gave
up hope in trying to save the first aid establishment. There were
some meetings and discussions behind the sense and negotiations were
done between the leaders and the headmaster. Outstanding among these
leaders were Mas. Sim Jin Tang, who offered his unselfish service
once again. Mas. Khaw Boon Wan and Mas. Yeap Chin Heng convinced the
headmaster that a first aid establishment should still be care for
the sick and injured pupils in the school
9th May 1970.....
After much
planning, the foundation stone was laid by some 5th
formers headed by Mas. Khaw Boon Wan. During the first general
meeting a committee was formed with Mas. Yeap Chin Heng being
appointed as its first president. The Chung Ling First Aid Corps was
the only independent first aid society in Malaysia at that time. The
corps was divided into 2 divisions – The senior division and the
junior division. A grand constitution for the corps was set. The
Exco sat until June 27 when many of its members resigned as they had
to sit for M.C.E. Mas. Chow Kuan Heng took over as the 2nd
president with Mas. Yong Yit Chin as vice president.
26th November 1970.....
The first
elementary and intermediate examination was held. Mas. Eu Kong Eng
an ex-leader was invited to be an examiner.
2nd
December 1970.....
A fire
fighting course was arranged for 35 senior members at Perak Road
Pusat Bomba. An examination was held on 28th December and
it was a 100% pass with 8 of them scoring distinction and 24
credits. A foot drill and command course was held at the civil
defence headquarters. First aid lectures were regularly conducted by
a qualified officer Mr. Chow Kuan Sin. High standards in both first
aid and foot drill knowledge were maintained. Enrolment at the end
of that year leapt to 109.
1st February 1975.....
The
newsletter was first successful published. Mas. Yeoh Kok Kheng was
elected as the chairman of the editorial board.
8th April 1977.....
The first
Interschool First Aid Quiz Contest was held. The idea of organising
this contest was put forward by Mas. Teh Bin Huat. The contest was
held annually except for the year 1975 & 1977. 4 out of 9 contests
held by the Corps, Chung Ling emerged champion. Kwang Wah Yit Poh
sponsored the trophy, prizes and souvenirs and F&N sponsored all
bottled drinks for the contest.
21st May 1977.....
The birth of
our corps' anthem. The lyric of the corps anthem was written by Mas.
Chin Chung Min, the tune by Mas. Loke Yee Chong.
27th July 1977.....
The
recreation committee organised the first campfire.
September
1977.....
The idea of
the information for the corps magazine was first grouted out. The
magazine was published in 1977.
7th January 1978.....
The first
advanced examination was held, it was conducted by Sgt. Major Lo
Siew Leong.
24th June 1978.....
The 1st
installation party cum 8th annual tea party was held at
8.30 am at school hall. This was the first time which leaders and
office bearers were officially installed.
14th July 1979.....
During the 9th
Anniversary Tea Party, the corps advisor Mr. Ong Ewe Chye,
officially proclaimed Dr. Yee Theam Sun’s agreement to be corps
surgeon.
6th March 1981.....
The first
Corps General Affair Proficiency Examination was held.
‘Anak Angkat Tentera’ Project 1980....
5 members
from the corps had been elected to represent our school to attend
the project which was organised by Markas 6 BIM, Sungai Patani
during the 1st term holidays.
May 1983.....
The fire
fighting squad was formed. Members of the corps who passed their
Fire fighting Proficiency Examination were elected to be members of
the squad.
Training
Course.....
To assess the
leadership of the members so that promotion could be carried out and
give extra training to the members. N.C.O. Training Course had been
carried out yearly in the school compound. Only members who passed
the N.C.O. Promotion Test were chosen to participate in the course.
During the course, lectures, training and competition were provided.
Doctors, officers from the Civil Defence, officers from the St. John
Headquarters and the Perak Road fire brigade, corps surgeon,
officers and instructors from the Rejimen Askar Melayu Diraja,
teachers and headmaster of the school, scouts of the school were
invited to train the participants.
FUNCTIONS AND ACTIVITIES (1970-1984)
As the aim of the corps was to render first aid
services, the first aiders of the corps offer their services for
events such as the School Annual Cross Country Race, Walkathon, etc.
The members also became the guard of honour together with the
prefects and scouts of the school and had represented the school in
many of the parades held.
Annual Tea Party.....
Officers from
various departments, advisors, corps surgeon, ex- leaders and
representatives from various schools were invited to attend this
party.
Recreational Activities.....
Picnics, Treasure hunt, Station Game and other activities were
organized to entertain the members and leaders themselves and to
foster friendship among themselves and the pupils from other
schools.
