***To View President/Divisions' Leader of Chung Ling St John
History of Chung Ling
St John Ambulance
1)1946-1951 – 5
Years in SJAB
15th
October, 1946..............
Mas.
Chew Kok Aun
(A pupil in the school) boosted the idea of establishing a First Aid
society in the school. He bravely expressed his views and opinions
in the school news bulletin. The first enrolment was launched from
the 300 boarders and population of over 1500 pupils. Mr. Yeh Chin
Yen, Chung Ling’s strict but ever popular discipline teacher
also played a decisive role in the foundation of the society. The
motto of the society was “Be Prepared to Serve the Injured and to
Save the Life”. The divisional surgeon was Dr. Ooi Kee Wan.
Lectures on first aid were quickly arranged and Mr. Looi Pah Weng,
the secretary of the SJAB also the instructor of that division, gave
the raw recruit a great deal of advice and training. The SJAB
commissioner, Mr. Chuah Thean Choon, was overjoyed with the
enthusiasm shown by Chung Ling boys.
28th
November 1946.........
This day was
set as ‘founder’s day’ and a simple ceremony was held to commemorate
it.
1950........
4 doctors
were assigned to examine the efficiency of the members. They were
Dr. Yong Chui Sooi, Dr. Yeow Seow Thong,
Dr. K.K. Chong and Dr. Oon Hock Liag.
1951......
There were
162 qualified members divided into 5 divisions affiliated to Penang
headquarters. They were enplaned into 6th to 10th.It
should be the only right to mention that there were only 10
divisions in the headquarters.
1952.....
The Chung
Ling members of the SJAB withdrew from headquarters. The reasons
were as follow:-
|
A. [A
great difference arose between the SJAB (St. John Ambulance
Brigade) and the SJAA (St. John Ambulance Association) and
there were indications of an impending split.] |
|
B. [A
letter was received demanding an explanation for the absence
of 6th to 10th divisions from the
Brigade Parade. None was given and therefore the
withdrawal.] |
2)1952-1956: 5 Years as Independent Society
1952-1957.......
Chung Ling established an independent first aid society and carried
on its normal activities and maintained strict discipline. It was
well noted for its sickbay. An hour each morning was set aside to
attend to the sick or dressed their sores.
When the
fund was low, members went around the classes to collect the extra
money to run the ‘clinic'. Each member owned a portable first aid
kit, which was fully equipped with medicine, and each one was
efficient and very well-trained to help others.
3)1957-1966 – 10 Years No First Aid
Society in School
23rd November 1957.......
First aid society was suspended. In fact all extra mural activities
in the school were stopped.
4)1967-1969 – MALAYSIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY
9th September 1967......
Saw the foundation of the Malaysian Red Cross Society
in the school. It was inspected by Madam Lee Kee Pin in the
afternoon at 4.00 o’clock. In fact, it was started in late February
with about 40 members by the founder- members Mas. Sim Jin Tang, Mas.

30th June 1968.....
6 members
were selected to participate in the Penang State First Aid
Competition and were fortunate at its first attempt to be placed 3rd
though the representatives were still inexperienced.
10th & 11th August 1968.....
Chung Ling
first set up a stall at the food and fun fair which was acclaimed
the beautiful and won a prize. Numerous prizes also came from the
Flag-Days.
1969.....
Chung Ling
was organised the Leaders’ Session on 1st March in which
various schools took part. The best 6 participants were picked
represent the Chung Ling unit in the state competition. Our
participants played their parts well but they felt they were
discriminated to be placed as runner-up to St. Xavier’s. However we
managed to emerge champion in the foot drill and uniform section in
that competition. A ‘protest’ was made on the spot as to the result
of the competition and a ‘report’ was made to the headmaster. The
following day, a letter was personally handed to our headmaster, Mr.
Waung Yoon Nein, complaining the misbehaviour of our contestants and
that unit has been suspended pending an investigation. The
headmaster responded by ‘withdrawing’ the unit from headquarters.
