| As I have said before, I love music. I love the places it takes you and the things it can say. There are things it can achieve. It can carry a message, speak a truth, or evoke emotion. It has such potential. But it gets squandered. Wasted. Ruined by egos and utlerior motives. You hear kids all the time saying "i wanna be a singer" or "i wanna be famous". It's fucking pathetic. Mtv takes camera crews through the houses of the richest rappers and rock stars to bathe in the glow of their ridiculously excessive consumerism. Money that would pay for a hospital wing or a dialysis machine goes on jewellery and waterfalls. Those who crave fame should be automatically disallowed the oppurtunity. People so insecure and desperate for attention whoring out their credibility and dignity for more spotlight time. A lifetime of music being based on one upmanship and show stealing. Entertainment. New bands think that this is what music is all about. Fame, money, becoming an icon. Well guess what kids. It's fucking not. I don't know why many people start bands. I find their motives questionable much of the time. I play bass guitar for The Contortionists. A band composed of human beings. We are not here to sing about self loathing or partying. We are not wrestling fans or meatheads. We do not wear fake blood or strike poses. This is not about being in the spotlight. This is not for money. This is not a desperate grab for fame or pathetic popularity. By all means hate us but at least realise that we have aspirations and something to say. Even in conception, we are already superior to more than half the bands on the planet. |

| The band was formed by Black Stevens and Jennifer Mary just under a year ago. I joined my old friends a few months later filling the vacant bass player position, being that i was in possession of a beat up old Fender Pbass copy with a twisted neck and bad wiring. So was born The Contortionists. Second guitarist Joe and drummer Matt should soon be with us, after we get the summer underway. Me, Black and Jenn have known each other for years, and we bear the same greivances with the state of modern music as one another. We have grown older together, and share a synchronicity. This band wouldn't function if the members were at odds. Jennifer Mary is the female voice of the band. Her personal lyrics, her voice soft and melodic and without pretense, her genuine character and warmth encapsulate the softer and more feminine side of The Contortionists. Black is the guitarist and prinicipal songwriter of the band. The songs he takes the vocals for are a different animal, crueller and more visceral, the black to Jenny's white. We have the blueprints for several albums already worked out. We have produced a few 8 song demo tapes and are making progress towards getting a good version of our first EP together. This summer should be a defining time for us. Check out the website. It's a good indication as to our direction and intent. As with this site, it's always work in development. More sections coming soon, including lyrics and in time we will have MP3's linked. Just as soon as we can get together to record some definitive versions. |
