Library Books

Students whose parents have signed a library permission slip may check out one library book at a time. Each class comes to the library twice a week, at which time students may exchange their library books. Library books are due one week after the date they are initially checked out. The library has various open book times when students may come exchange their book. See the Open Book Schedule for specific days and times.

Textbooks

In the first month of school, as well as throughout the year, textbooks may be assigned to students for the purpose of supporting the academic curriculum. These materials may go home for students to complete homework or independent study. The textbooks are due at the end of the school year before the summer break commences.

Expectations

When students enter the library they must observe the SOAR principles that guide behavior on our campus. In the library, you can SOAR by being:

Lost/Damaged Books

Sometimes circumstances beyond your control may cause a book to be lost or damaged. Sometimes damage is fixable if taken care of quickly. Please show any damage to the librarian immediately. If the book cannot be found or is damaged beyond repair, the book must be paid for. The library accepts cash or checks (made payable to: MUSD) for oustanding fines. Students with oustanding debts on their account will not be permitted to attend special end-of-the-year activities, incuding Junior Olympics and the 5th grade Beach Club event. In case of financial hardship, payment plans ar available. Students or parents may also volunteer in the library to pay off the account balance.

Computer Lab

Students must have a signed Technology Use Policy (TUP) form in order to use the computer lab or other technology equipment on campus. Students may only visit websites expressly permitted by their teacher or other school staff. If students are found viewing sites or materials deemed inappropriate, they will be in violation of the TUP and may be excluded from using technology. Each year students will learn about appropriate digital citizenship, internet safety, and how to identify and report cyberbullying. In an effort to keep everyone healthy, we aks that all computer users have clean hands when using computer equipment.Hand sanitizer is available in the library and should be used before each lab session.

FAQ

Q: I can't find my library book. What should I do?
A: Check a few places that books seem to liek to hide: in your desk, in your backpack, in your teahcer's classroom library, under your bed, on a bookcase at home, in/under the couch. If you still can't find it, get a report from the librarian letting you know how much it costs.
Q: When can I check out a new book?
A: You can check out a new book during the two times your class comes to the library during the week. Ask your teacher for the specific days and times. You can also come in before school, after school and at morning recess. See our Open Book Schedule for more specific time and date restrictions.
Q: Can I play on the computers at my recess or lunch time?
A: Unfortunately, the library cannot allow students to play on the computers during recess and lunch. Other classes have computer lab time at those times. If you need to take an AR quiz on your book at recess, the librarian or the teacher using the lab may or may not be able to find an extra computer for you to use. It is best to take AR quizzes in class whenever possible.
Q: Can parents visit the library too?
A: Of course! Parents simply sign in as a visitor at the front office and make sure to let the office staff know you are coming to the library. Parents can assist students in checking out or returning books. They may also assist their child in logging on and taking an AR quiz. Before and after school, the computer lab is available for students to do homework or research as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
