IMPORTANT SITES IN THE PERFECTURE OF

Arkadi monastery, significant monastery established in 14th -15th century. In the monastery the monk protected women with their children from the Turks but when they besieged the monastery the monks set fire to a storage of gun powder and blew up the monastery.
Prevelis monastery, it's role in the second world war was significant. It has a panoramic view of the south coasts of Crete.
Prevelis gorge, a beautiful gorge in the south Crete, where the river Prevelis runs, that ends in a lake with palms.Extremely beautiful beaches.
Kourtaliotiko and Kotsifou gorges, they are smaller than Prevelis gorge but in a beauty equal.
Mountain of Psiloritis, the highest mountain of Crete. It is the mountain where Zeus was born and a goat, Amalthia, fed him. There is the Nida plateau, where is an observatory and a ski center. You may also see vaulted constructions "mitata" where the shepherds live.
Cave in Zoniana, it has 14 chambers and 145m long.
Melidoni cave, it has 6 chambers abd 140m long. In 1823, 370 people were besieged by the Turks and died there.
