7/21/04 We had an appointment with pediatrition Marilou today. Aaron weighed 7 lbs 9.5 ozs, Mitchell was 5 lbs 14 ozs, and Jake was 6 lbs 9 ozs. She was pleased with everyones weight gain. Everyone was looking very healthy, but she was able to hear a murmur on Jake. She believed it is caused because of the PDA, the heart condition he had in the NICU, had reopened. The drug they gave him in the NICU to close the PDA may have closed it but it is possible that it reopened. So, she refered us the the Childrens Heart Clinic (part of Children's Hospital) to have them give their opinion and do an echocardiogram.

7/22/04 We took Jake to the Childrens Heart Clinic today. The Doctor took a listen and agreed with Marilou that is sounded like a PDA. He had an echocardiogram done just to confirm his thoughts. It showed a moderate PDA. He and Marilou were not too concerned about the PDA becuase Jake seems to have no problem gaining weight. It is causing a little build up of fluid in his lungs that makes him breath a little heavier than the other two. The Doc wants to just keep and eye on him and make sure he doesn't have trouble sucking on the bottle because of the heavier breathing. If he does have trouble they will probably try a diuretic to get rid of some of the excess fluid. They will wait to do anything with the PDA as long as it isn't causing any major problems. It still may close naturally, and if not, if they can wait til Jake is a bit bigger, they can usually just go up through a vein to close it rather than doing actual surgery. The Doc will see him again in a few weeks.

7/23/04 Today was Matt's last day of full time work at Mid-County Coop. He is going to try to be Mr. Mom. Once things get a little settled down, he will probably be doing some part-time work for the Coop in the evenings after Chrissy gets home and on weekends.

7/28/04 Today was Chrissy's first day back to work in almost 4 months. It was tough to be away from home and mostly the boys, but she survived the day.

8/2/04 The boys made a last minute stop to see Marilou today. She had told us at the last appointment that Aaron had some signs that would make him more likely to have a hernea, so we should watch for it. Well, today dad noticed the bulge on his abdomen, and Marilou didn't want to wait until thier appointment Friday to see him, so we all went today. She confirmed that he does have a hernea, but it is not an emergency situation, so they will probably wait until he gets to about 10 lbs to do surgery on it. We will be calling tomorrow to set up an appointment with the surgen to see what they think. As long we were there, everyone got their checkup and Aaron weighed 8 lbs 11.5 ozs, Mitchell weighed 6 lbs 13ozs, and Jake weighed 7 lbs 13 ozs. So they are gaining around 1.5 ozs per day since last appt., which is good. Besides the hernea, all boys looked healthy, and Jake's murmur is getting quieter, so we can hope the PDA is closing on its own, but we will see what the heart Doc says in a week and a half. Next appointment with Marilou will be in two weeks which will be their 2 month checkup, so they will have to get the first set of their shots.

8/9/04 Aaron had surgery today for his hernias. He definately had one on the left side and they were going to "explore" the right side to see if it needed to be closed and once they looked inside they found that it did need to be corrected so he had both sides corrected. Everything went well and he is recovering and will spend the night in the hospital and be discharged tomorrow (Tuesday). Both mom and dad will stay with him overnight at the hospital. We will meet with the surgeon again in two weeks at his office.
