| A situation most of us would never imagine, let alone have to face. Most of us would call it a nightmare. For Carl, the nightmare is not over. There was that night; then the trial. Did I forget to mention that part? Not only did Carl have to face the terrible reality of another human being dead, he was arrested for murder. Not taken in and questioned, then charged due to some flaw in his story - aressted on the spot and charged with the murder of... well, it seems his would-be assailant was a police officers brother. That shouldn't matter, you say? Equal justice under the law? Ever lived in a small town? Never mind, I live in 'rural America' and while I truly love it, the small systems are often (/usually?) a bit less impersonal than the big city. That is usually the good part and the bad part of living out in the sticks. Back to Carl's nightmare... ever had a bad dream, woke up and realized you were still having the same dream? He was found "guilty" and sentenced to prison. Bad enough, right? But don't forget the part about gran mal seizure... I've never been inside the Colorado State Prison in |

| Canon City, but I have seen it from the outside. I can't imagine it as a comfortable place to flop around in the throes of a seizure. Apparently the staff or warden or someone agree, so they placedCarl in an isolation unit. I suppose that keeps the other inmates from beating on him while he convulses. Somehow, a smaller concrete and steel box just doesn't seem like the best place to beat yourself up in, either. Ah, well, keeps the blood off the other inmates. None of this would bother me too much, as I know it happens every day in penitentiaries, prisons, city jails, county jails, and there just isn't a lot I can do about it. There is a difference, though, in this one case - you see, Carl is a member in the Body of Christ. A fairly close member, as he was a member of one of our congregations. Did I say was? Still is, just we may not get to fellowship together for a long time. Without mercy, not again in this lifetime. |
