FORGOTTEN LEGENDS - Killian the Paladin
Killian's childhood was traumatic at best, and downright awful at worst. He never knew his parents, as they both quickly succumbed to the Black Cough that plagued their village and wiped out most of the fishers that refused to leave. Seeing nothing for their young, 2 year old son other than death and despair, Killian's parents brought him to a monestary of St. Cuthbert of the Cudgel. There, the monks raised him in the virtures of St. Cuthbert, the god of justice, retribution, and law.

When Killian had reached age 12, his monestary had come under attack. Some wanted to blame a mysterious pair of residents who came and went as they pleased, but Killian knew better. It was none other than Lord Castig, destroyer of towns and ravager of the highlands. Killian, despite his age, accompanied his mentor, the abbot of the monestary, to act as an envoy of the monestary. But St. Cuthbert was not with them that day, and Killian witnessed his friend and teacher die at the hands of Castig.

For four days, Killian held out revealing the location of the secluded monestary, surviving against torture and pain that a man twice his age would have buckled under. But fatigue ruled over willpower, and Killian was forced to not only give away the location, but to watch Castig burn it to the ground, killing all those inside. But Castig spared him his life - Killian was sold into slavery. Three long years of brutality, slavery, and exposure to the pits of hell itself erased Killian's mind of anything he had learned or been taught as a resident of the monastery.

Castig returned for Killian, and began to shape him into a different man. A man of brutality. A man of hatred. A man of revenge. For eigth long years, Killian steadily moved up in the ranks among Castig's Army, soon surpassing many nearly twice his age. He quickly became Castig's "right hand", spearheading Castig's hand of tyranny throughout the land. There was no stopping Castig, and Killian had become a willing accomplice.

A raid on a nobleman's house in the northern highlands forced Killian into remembering his past. As the final deathblow was laid upon the nobleman and his family, Killian looked up. There, above the altar in the chapel of the nobleman, was a statue of St. Cuthbert of the Cudgel. Killian had been reunited once again with his god. St. Cuthbert filled his mind with the priciples that he had grown up with and revered. Priciples of law. Principles of honor. And most importantly, principles of RETRIBUTION!

Later that evening, Killian devised a plan. First, he would take revenge upon Castig. As Castig's lifeless body laid spralled on the table with a sword sticking out of his chest, Killian instructed all those present at the camp to not go into Lord Castig's tent until the morning. No one dared question Killian. As he disappeared into the night, holding both his mentor's staff (which Castig had kept all these years) and Castig's greatsword, Killian set out to find some long lost friends. He needed to explain what had happened, needed to set the record straight, and more importantly, need absolution.
