| Five hundred years ago a ship from Spain was wrecked on the rocky coast of the Canary Islands. The ships crew while stranded on the island observed the new species of birds and brought some canaries back with them from the island after being rescued. When the bird was introduced into Europe it became the most popular bird because of its rare singing ability. Canaries have been a favourite household pet since 1610 and many of todays breeds go back to as far as 1790. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
