| Schoolboy Andrew Baker, 15, is on a mission. The teenager, a pupil at St Birinus School, Didcot, is on a personal crusade to muster as much money as possible for the Oxford Children's Hospital campaign - and he is getting everybody involved. As head fundraiser at his school in Mereland Road, he has raised thousands of pounds for the children's charity. Fox FM has recognised his hard work by giving him the Local Heroes Young Person Award. Andrew said receiving the award was an unexpected pleasure. He said: "I was surprised but really pleased." Andrew, of King Walk, Didcot, started fund-raising after receiving treatment at Oxford's Radcliffe Infirmary, in Woodstock Road, for hydrocephalus. He underwent reconstuctive surgery in 2001. He said: "The Radcliffe Infirmary is an old hospital which could do with updating." Andrew has organised a variety of activities, mostly at his school, in aid of the campaign. A non-uniform day raised more than 1,000 and his latest event was a competition to guess famous people's catchphrases. "In May we had a guess-the-teacher competiton using old baby photos which raised 70." He added: "I've got lots more ideas. They just seem to come to me and all my friends help out. "I hope the money can be used to help improve facilities for children in hospitals." Andrew's mum, Ann, said: "I was really exicted when I heard he had won the award. He has been brilliant and worked really hard. I am proud of him." |
| By Daniel Freeman Total: 01.36 The winner of the Young Persons Award is 15-year old Andrew Baker from Didcot. Now, a couple of years ago Andrew underwent successful surgery at the Radcliffe Infirmary, and after that, he's made a determined effort to fundraise for the Oxford Children's Hospital, and some effort it was as Andrew explains. Andrew says: "I've been fundraisng at my school, St Birinus, and I've raised, so far I've raised 1,070, and I raised 1,000 with a non-uniform day in February." As you can see, Andrew is a very special young man. So how does he feel to be receiving the award? Andrew says: "Surprised and pleased. All the teachers at my school were really pleased when I told them today." And it's left Andrew's mum, Ann, feeling very proud of her son. Mum says: "Very proud and very pleased and surprised. Yer lovely." |
