Griffin, Griffon
Griffins have many ways of spelling their names. Greffon, Grriffun, Griffoune, Gryffoune, Grefyne, Grephoun, Greffen, Griffin, Griffion, Griffon, Griffoun, Griffown, Griffyn, Grifon, Grifyn, Griphin, Griphinne, Griphon, Gryffen, Gryffink Gryffon, Gryffoun, Gryfon, Gryfoun, Gryphen, Gryphin, and also Gryphon.  Althought the most common were griffin, griffon, and gryphon.
Griffins are well known for their many characteristics which includes their love for gold.
Gold is a symbol of the Sun, and since Griffins are sacred to the Sun, the connection of the two is inevitable.  Although other people seem to think that Giffins just simply enjoy watching the gold and precious stones sparkling in the sunlight.  Others also seem to think that Griffins also have a natural instinct to find buried treasures.  What is definately true is the fact that Griffins did, as a matter of fact, hoard the metal, and because of this, they were sought after by neighboring humans and Arimaspians.
Another characteristic of a Gryphon is their hate for horses and their war with Arimaspians.  Arimaspians are almost giant one-eyed men who are also "fair haired" while also being fierce and cruel.  Most of the time, they were described as monsterous, scruffy & ugly. Alhtough the Arimaspians attitude and physical appearances don't matter much because no matter what, they are a constant enemy of Gryphons.  It is told that Arimaspians tried to steal the gold guarded by the Gryphons, which caused their affairs.  Equestians.  That was what Arimaspians were noted for and they constantly attacked the Gryphons on horseback. So, eventually the Gryphons began to connect horses with ARimaspians which put them in Gryphon's category of ENEMY.
Griffons not only had war with the Arimaspians, but also with the Amazons.  Amazons are known to be beautiful, seclusive and ferocious warrior women.  The war between Griffons and Amazons are representatives of the Sun's fight with the moon.  As they also have an eternal fight.  Each strong and obdurate, day in and day out.  The name Amazon comes from the Armenian word maza which means moon.
Another characteristic of a Griffin is their immense strength told to be stronger than a lion's.  Although their lower half of their body is of a lion.  In fact, they are so strong that they are told to be able to pluck men, horses, and oxen into the air easily.
Stories of the agate eggs are rare, but still a part of Griffon history.  It is told that Griffons deposit agates in their nest because of the agate's special beneficial properties. Griffon lay agate eggs.  In its nest, the griffin lays the agate for its help and medicine.
During the middle ages, feathers and claws of a Griffon were believed to have magical abilities.  If there were to have poison in liquid, it is said that the liquid will change color if it was served in a cup fashioned from a Gryphon's claw.  The only way one person could actually acquire a Griffon's claw is by a holy man who cured a Gryphon of some illness and received the claw as a payment for his kindness.  The feather of a Griffon is also believed to be able to cure blind people.
