The Benu-Bird is the sacred birtd of Heliopolis, which is also having to do with the benben stone. (Obelisk)  And with the cult of the sun gods Atum and Re.  The Benu-Bird's name comes from the Egyptian verb meaning rise in brilliance or to shine, "wbn."  In the pyramid text, the Benu-Bird is shown as a yellow wagtail and later in the Book of The Dea, as the gray heron with two-feathered crest and a long beak.  It appears as a yellow wagail to serve as a manifestation of Atum and as a gray heron to the ba of Re and Wesir (Osiris)  Osiris's connection led to its depiction of wearing the crown atef.
The spell for becoming transeformed into a benu-bird which iwas usually accompanied by a depiction of the benu-bird was shown in chapter 38 of the Book Of the Dead.
