Co-operative: Home Options In Childhood Education

C:HOICE's choice of homeschooling (etc) books and magazines

Bibliographies compiled by C:HOICE members and others, listing books, magazines and other publications on topics of interest to homeschoolers: homeschooling, alternative educational methods, learning styles, parenting and more.

C:HOICE members' bibliography

C:HOICE members will add to this bibliography as they become aware of good books, magazines or other publications they'd like to recommend.

Some of the categories may seem irrelevant at first glance. It's true that their relevance is not to homeschooling in particular, but to being human in a conscious and empowered way. Many of us are homeschoolers out of a commitment to doing what we believe is best - for our kids and for our family; sometimes even for society as a whole. Our homeschooling is only an expression of a more general life-encompassing perspective.

The following recommendations are made by individual members and are not necessarily congruent with the philosophies of other members.

Alphanumeric references in parentheses are the books' references in the London Public Library's system.

Books by Arnold Lobel (for beginner readers, published by HarperTrophy) are humourous and tend to have good reminders of what's important in life, expressed in a simple way:

  • Frog and Toad All Year
  • Frog and Toad Are Friends
  • Frog and Toad Together
  • Days with Frog and Toad
  • Owl At Home
  • Grasshopper On The Road
  • Mouse Soup
  • Mouse Tales

Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik (for beginner readers, published by HarperTrophy) are kind and gentle with a subtle touch of humour:

  • Little Bear
  • Little Bear's Visit
  • Little Bear's Friend
  • Father Bear Comes Home
  • A Kiss For Little Bear

Positively Mother Goose, by Diane Loomans, Karen Kolberg, and Julia Loomans (H J Kramer Inc, Starseed Press, P.O.Box 1082, Tilburon CA 94920 USA): A revised Mother Goose without all the nastiness of the traditional rhymes. - Marian

Education:

Teach Your Own: a Hopeful Path for Education, by John C. Holt; Delacorte Press, New York, 1981. The late John Holt was one of the most respected authors and pioneers in the modern homeschooling community.

Learning Styles:

- Marian

Parenting:

Kids Are Worth It!, by Barbara Coloroso; Somerville House Publishing, Toronto, 1995. For parenting "with wisdom and wit" - in a non-violent, non-alienating way that respects everyone's dignity and teaches tools for self-discipline. - Marian

Knights Without Armor - A Practical Guide for Men in Quest of Masculine Soul , by Aaron R. Kipnis, PhD; Jeremy P. Tarcher, New York, 1991. This book is something for parents of boys to read: although it isn't written as a parenting book, it may give you insight into what it's like to grow up male in our culture. - Marian

Personal Power:

Person to Person - The Problem of Being Human, by Carl R. Rogers and Barry Stevens with Eugene T. Gendlin, John M. Shlien, and Wilson Van Dusen; Real People Press, California, 1967. This book may at first seem like it's a book of psychotherapy papers, but the alternating chapters are personal reflections by Barry Stevens, and are thought-provoking and liberating - may interest unschoolers. - Marian

Despair and Personal Power in the Nuclear Age, by Joanna Macy; New Society Publishers, Philadelphia, 1983. This book is ostensibly about dealing with our feelings of despair and apathy when faced with the prospect of nuclear annihilation. The relevance is in the exploration of how to move from disempowerment to empowerment, and involves concepts of finding common ground with those who seem to be on the other side of the fence - something worth applying to situations of conflict with school boards. - Marian

Conflict Resolution:

Aside from the usefulness of conflict resolution in situations involving homeschoolers and school boards, the topic is relevant to homeschooling support groups in their group dynamics, and, of course, to homeschooling (and non-homeschooling) family dynamics as well.

C:HOICE's group process as outlined in the Effective Group Work guidelines, is based on win-win conflict resolution. This is also something worth modeling and teaching to our children. Some of the following books are on group conflict resolution, while others are on one-on-one relationships. Although the latter are marketed towards couples, the principles can be applied in any dynamic between two people.

Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In, by Roger Fisher, William Ury and Bruce Patton; Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1991. Win-win conflict resolution. -Marian

After The Honeymoon - How Conflict Can Improve Your Relationship, by Daniel B.Wile; John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1988. You don't need to make the other person change their pattern: if you change your own, the dynamics will automatically change. - Marian

Conscious Loving - The Journey to Co-Commitment, by Gay Hendricks and Kathlyn Hendricks; Bantam Books, New York, 1990. Co-commitment takes two, and is a positive alternative to co-dependence. -Marian
