BIOGRAPHY
Aaliyah was born January 16, 1979 in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York to Michael and Diane Haughton. By the age of five Aaliyah and her older brother, Rashad, along with their parents moved to Detroit, Michigan. Diane Haughton gave up a teaching career to become a stay at home mother. At the ages of 8 and 9, Aaliyah was singing at weddings around the Michigan area. By the age of 11, she landed a spot on Star Search. Aaliyah did not win but with her families encouraging words she continued on her road to stardom. Not that long after, she performed with Gladys Knight at the Bally's Casino in Las Vegas for five nights.
A few years later Barry Hankerson, her uncle, had R. Kelly to hear her sing. He was so impressed with her talent he signed her right on the spot. R. Kelly ended up writing and producing all the tracks on Aaliyah's first album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number. There were rumors questioning surrounding Aaliyah and R. Kelly's relationship. Aaliyah denied everything and R. Kelly will not comment on them.
For her next album, One In A Million, she enlisted the talent of Missy Elliott and Timbaland. In the summer of 1999, she shot her first movie Romeo Must Die. Movie producer Joel Silver was so impressed with her talent that he signed her to Matrix 2 and Matrix 3. Aaliyah also starred in Anne Rice's: Queen of the Damned.
Aaliyah and her entourage of 8 boarded a small Cessna 402 that departed from Marsh Harbour airport bound for Opa-Locka, FL. The plane crashed shortly after take off at approximately 6:50pm. Six people were killed on impact and the other three died later due to injuries.
