| For those of you who are wondering "What are honorifics?", honorifics are words Japanese people add to the end of people's names to determine their relationship with a specific person. e.g. Naomi-Chan, Ken-kun etc... You will find lot's of honorifics used in Chobits and other Anime's. Here's a list of most of the honorifics and a description of how and when they are used. |
| CHAN- A term use for some one the same age as you or younger. This is mainly attatch by a name to someone close to you, like a friend. This honorific is mainly used for girls, however it can be used for boys as well. Hiyaba & Yumi calls Chii, Chii-chan. KUN- The same as "Chan", however kun is usually used for boys. SAMA- This honorific is rarely used. It is used to address some one with a high status whom you show a lot of respect for. SAN- This honorific is used to address some one older than you or a person you don't know very well. "San" is another way of saying mister, master, sir, miss, mrs etc... San is a honorific to show respect to someone. SENPAI- A term for a friendly relationship. Yumi often calls Hideki, Senpai. SENSEI- A term used to call a teacher or doctor. You will called your doctor by its name, followed by sensei. whereas you would normally call a teacher Sensei, just like Hideki calls Shimzu. When no honorifics are used ~ Sometimes honorifics are not used by certain Japanese people. Usually Japanese people don't use honorifics if they are very close to each other and agree that they should not use honorifics because of their strong bond. Calling people by their surname ~ Japanese people always call people by their surname, unless they know each other very well and agree to be called by their first name. |
