Yu-San Lin(1907-)
--A Belief in Nature

Brief Prof. Lin was born in 1907 at a town of Chai-ye country, named "beauty town" in the central-south of Taiwan. His career as a painter began since he was only teens. He learned traditional Chinese painting skills from the local artists who worked for his dad's store which was of framing-painting stuff. He also learned western watercolor skills from Japanese artist who resided in town. By going study in Japan for twotimes, he played a professonal role in the art society of the town. After successfully assessing his works to the authorized exhibition, his name becam national wellknown. In 1951, he taught in a public high school of Taipei, two years later, he joined the faculty of the Fine Art Department of National Taiwan Normal University until 1977. Now, he is in his 90's. A senior artist represents the art history of Taiwan from the period of Japan's control to Taiwan's restoration. |

His Ideas About Painting

" For Prof. Lin asserts that sketch is the base for painting. People need to do a lot of schetchs and observation. Once you have solid experiences, you are able to catch the spirits and feelings of the nature. You will be more knowledgeable and resourceable when you working on your painting." ------ (Chen, 1985). |
His Painting Process
|
Prof. Lin used to work only during the daytime, he usually stop befor 4:00. He takes good care of his eyes so they could work for him as he need. "He does sketches all the times. It was kind of giving him effective tools and senses to portrait the nature or objects that he want to paint." "When he starts to paint these sketches always around, so he takes the resources and feelings freely. He used to take notes when he does skectches and observations. " ------ (Chen, 1985).

" Prof. Lin seems to aggree with that art is something being able to touch you, your feeling and soul, no matter what the materials or skills that the artist deals with." ------ (Chen, 1985). |
