The Great Wall of Chinaby Johann Fong The Great Wall of China is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and is the only man-made Originally built to project the Chinese empire from attacking tribes from the north, the Great Wall was actually built during the reign of many Chinse Dynasties. Many pieces of the Wall crumbled throughout the years, and the ruling empires would rebuild these parts and add to it. The wall was started by China's first emporer, Qin Shi Huang who ruled during the Qin Dynasty. The Emporer unified China from a conglomerate of feudal states. During this time, Qin also connected many of the smaller walls and fortified them into one larger wall. Ensuing Dynasties followed suit, building and reconstructing the wall to protect their own interests. This construction of the Great Wall continued over a span of a thousand years. Now the Great Wall is merely a tourist attraction. Most of the thousand miles of wall is now in ruin, overrun by both nature and man. There is no longer a need for a physical barrier this large for China and it would be inefficient Today, millions of visitors travel to see the Great Wall--it is a true testament to mankind's will and desire. And for something really cool, check out the clocks below--the numbers are all in Chinese! The shirts are cool, too and if you wear it to while eating Dim Sum with your chopsticks, you are sure to get noticed! Check out the store below for other uniquely Asian products. |
