LiveNet

Well, in the first lab session today we are exposed to an online communication software named LiveNet. Below is our conversation about LiveNet. Please take note about the initials below as JL -June Ling, LY - Li Ying, WL - Wee Leng, WY - Wei Yoke, and YW - Yin Wan.

LY

:

I think LiveNet is pretty much the same as IRC, ICQ, isn’t it?

All

:

Yupe…

WY

:

MSN Messenger is another example.

JL

:

It’s also like Yahoo Messenger.

LY

:

Ah! I just thought of another example, Bulletin Board. hehe...

WL

:

Hmm, to be specific LiveNet allowed the users to create certain positions to the members and each member in the community has different position, different authority.

YW

:

I think LiveNet is a very safe place for our group discussion because we need to have our password in order to login.

LY

:

As an illustration, the group leader (acts as the Owner) need to first create a new group for their members to start any discussion, transferring of files. Each member is assigned to different position (eg. designer, supplier, client, coordinator etc.) and have different authority.

WL

:

When we want to add a new member, we need to know their user name, and give them a position. When each member is assigned to different position, means, the security is much safer, and reliable, where only the OWNER is allowed to change the information, and their authority.

YW

:

The owner has the authority to choose whether all the roles have the same authority with the owner.

WY

:

Basically, this is a good program to use especially in the business environment or online business. Because nowadays, security is a major need for human beings to feel safe and comfortable.

LY

:

Not only that it’s safe to be used I think it is also an easy-to-use and user-friendly software. Because there are steps provided to guide you on every single queries you have. Moreover, the steps are simple and can be done in just few minutes.

JL

:

There are so many online communication software nowadays dominated by ICQ, MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. I feel that it is like a monopolized business model in the Internet World.

WY

:

Hmm, I think you have a point.

JL

These ICQ, Messengers have already established a solid position when the Internet Industry boomed in mid 90’s. Moreover, the rapidly changing preferences of the users are not easy to cope with when there are such strong competitors in the industry. In my opinion, it is difficult for new online communication software like LiveNet to establish a position in this industry, especially when they couldn’t provide the kind of service that could delight the users, like changing background of the chat room, emotions icons, sounds alert and etc.

TeamWave

TeamWave Workplace offers a flexible rooms-based collaboration environment supporting both real-time and asynchronous group work.  TeamWave is more useful compared to LiveNet. It allows users to draw on the white board as it is very useful for the education purposes when describing something that needs illustration support for easy understanding. Besides that, the functions that enables users to join in the chat room, and tools is much easier to use.

In addition, TeamWave allow us to draw graphs, add addresses, and exchange files as well! Compare to LiveNet, TeamWave does not need us to assign a role as different roles have different authority, which might not be a pleasant thing to do. TeamWave welcomes everyone that joins the chat room, and make friends disregarding the status of each other. As a result, everyone in the chat room have the same authority in doing everything. TeamWave also give the users to have the flexibility of entering one chat room to the other. The most important thing is that it is much simpler to use.

The main disadvantage for TeamWave might be the lack of function of changing one's status name. The name of a user seems to be set in by the administrator that enable us to use TeamWave. Therefore, it does not allow the users to have the convenient of changing their names that appeared in the chat rooms.

Online Lecture

Online lecture is something new for our group members. We were very excited by the thought of it – attending the lecture online. It let us have the feeling of we are doing something very high in technology, as you should know, we are a whole bunch of girls who are studying business, unlike our others classmates who are mostly in computing field.

The lecture which is conducted online requires a Java-Enabled browser, and seems to be so fascinating. The lecture was held in the lab, where everyone could sit in front of the computer to have lecture and interactions at the same time. The lecturer showed the slides and typed messages online. We, at the same time, could ask the questions too. It is something very wonderful as we could get more from the lecturer by asking a lot of questions. In this way, it could aid the students who are unable or shy to speak up in the lecture hall because, sometimes, we are scare to interrupt the lecturer when the lecture is proceeding. The gap between lecturer and students could be minimized since the Questions & Answers session is more intellectual and involved greater participation.

Online lecture is fun and convenient for the all students because we would not feel boring easily. Above all, we could assess the lecture in anywhere in the world as long as that we are connected to the Internet and assess the lecture at the same time. In conclusion, all of our group members have a consistent idea about the online lecture is that we would like to have our next lecture online.
