The 40 Watt: May 29, 2001

So Lucas invites me up to Athens to see a show. The company he works for is throwing a bash for one of my favorite bands, Grandaddy. Free PBR and food...it was too good to pass up.

We show up early and spend a lot of time just hanging out, which is cool, because it's the 40 Watt. The 40 Watt is one of my favorite clubs in the world. I have seen some of my all-time favorite shows there: the Flaming Lips, Built to Spill, Bright Eyes, Grandaddy (twice now), the Blue Ribbon Ball, etc. It's a cool place.

I was hanging out with Courtnie and her pal from the library, whose name was taken from me by Pabst Blue Ribbon. We just sat around gabbin and chattin. I told her pal story after story about Lucas. At one point I was hanging out with a bunch of people I don't know and the song "Untrustable" by Built to Spill starts playing over the club's stereo...and we all started singing along. It was really cool. Nobody ever knows Built to Spill songs. Turns out her favorite band is Built to Spill. How cool is that?

After what seemed like an hour or two, the opening band came up. They were the Starlight Mints, a good name. They played really good pop songs. They were catchy and unusual, in a good way.

Then came Grandaddy.
