Swiss Re Tower
London
Also known as 30 St. Mary Axe, and the Gherkin.
Skyscrapers >
The Swiss Re tower, also known as 30 St. Mary Axe (its street address) and the Gherkin (especially by the press -  due to its shape), is perhaps the most notable piece of contemporay architecture in London. The tower rises to 180 metres (590 feet), and is the second tallest building in London's central business district, The City. The skyscraper was designed by Norman Foster architects, one of the most well-known British architect firms.
At the very top of the tower is a restaurant, accessable only to people who work in the building.
The photo on the left shows the tower in July 2003, with one crane remaining on the tower. Below is how the tower looked on the 20th December, externally complete, with no cranes remaining.
