Album Review (brief)
....
Chick has a raspy, slightly breathless voice, backed very simply by a guitar and the occasional precussion instrument.  Musically she draws comparisoms to the Indigo Girls and Everything but the Girls Eden album (i.e when EBTG were good).  Although she is from the UK, Chick has an American sound that puts her closer to Jewel than Eddie Reader.
The album opens with a distinctively Indigo Girls-esque Icarus.  It reminds me a little of Michelle Shocked in its jolly folk sound with thinly disguised dark lyrics...Will you stay? Is a very pretty love song about longing about struggling with feelings for someone that you shouldnt love.  It is a sweet, melodic track that makes you feel warm and fuzzy..... Free Range is such a strong album that everyone Ive played it to wants a copy.  That is the best recommendation I can think of for any artist!

Album Review (brief)
Chick has released No Gimmicks, the follow-up to her acclaimed debut Free Range, and it's a girl-powered treat for the ears.

No Gimmicks is an accomplished release, with smooth production and excellent musicianship. It's pure pop and because it's the work of a singer / songwriter it is, not surprisingly, driven by the songs and the singing. Themes cover the waterfront, from traditional love songs to what Chick describes as "political pop."

It's not the kind of music that would give you a headache, unless you were the kind of person who has an aural allergy to laid-back, mellow, acoustic sounds. There are a few strings and some piano in there too, but the guitar and voice is really where it's at. Need comparisons? Chick sounds like Joni Mitchell, Everything But The Girl, Jewel and, naturally, Ani di Franco.

Highlights include the sing-a-long 'Sexuality,' but 'Same Difference' is also a beautifully paced love song that's worth a listen. Despite the delicacy of the melodies, Chick turns in some darker themes on this album, which hint at her richness as a songwriter and musical storyteller.  (July 2005 Rainbow Network)
