�TURNING LIGHT PINK?
With a career full of leftist leanings, his previous nominations for president of the university met strong opposition from Malaca�ang. His eventual election to the post allegedly elicited a loud conservative uproar, although not a few of his friends confirmed that then President Joseph "Erap" Estrada actually liked him.
But his detractors are now placing his election battle cry of him being an "unrepentant Marxist" in close scrutiny. This was a consequence of the several issues confronting Nemenzo, such as his position on the tuition increase, his lobbying for the revitalization of the General Education curriculum and his idea of a democratic consultation.
The question posed is quite simple: what is Nemenzo's real color?
According to Prof. Bomen Guillermo of the Department of Filipino, it seemed that Nemenzo has wavered on his former Marxist-Communist orientation.
"Hindi mo maitatawa na ang mga pag-aaral niyang Marxista at radikal ay mga tunay na ambag. Pero tila nilamon na siya ng kanyang pagkapangulo at ng umiiral na sistema. Ngayon ay wala na siyang anumang napakaliit na hakbangin tungo sa mithiing mapagpalaya."
Gilluermo voted for Nemenzo before. He said that he signed the signature sheet because of Nemenzo's progressive past. "Higit siyang mas katanggap-tanggap dahil mukhang bukas siya sa mga ihahapag ng mga guro at estudyante."
But if the elections were held today, he would have second thoughts. "Mag-a-abstain na lang siguro ako. Nakakatawang isipin na ang Marxist ay wala nang ipinag-iba sa isang technocrat na Presidente. Hindi ko naman inasahang magkakaganito siya."
R.C. Asa, former secretary-general of the Center for Nationalist Studies, preferred to pose the question in a more straightforward manner, though.
"Ibinasura na ba ni Nemenzo ang marxismo o nangingibabaw sa marxismo ang kanyang pagkapangulo?" This was Asa's reaction to Nemenzo's alleged criticism of the groups who lambasted his position on the tuition increase.
Asa could only put forward to Nemenzo his simple challenge: "Ang matandang aso, hindi na natuturuan ng bagong kakakyahan. At kalunus-lunos ito, lalo na kung tanda ng pagkabulok ang katandaan. Kaya tama na ang kahol Nemenzo. Patunayan mong reaksyonaryo ka nga sa iyong pagtanda."
Nemenzo, meanwhile, can only shake his head in amusement.
"I have never deviated from my Marxist orientation. I should not be judged by their standards."
