BEYOND THE NAKED EYE |

Have you ever experienced defending your life from some clear and present danger? Did you feel hopeless? Worse, did you feel like not an inch of your body is moving to your defense? I had. Two armed men tried to steal my cellphone once but I was able to fight them off. Thanks to my grandfather (God bless his soul) who has patiently taught me the basics of Jeet Kune Doh. This "martial arts designed to kill" that was developed by Bruce Lee surprisingly contains very easy to learn self-defense. Here are two of them: A. THE HIP THROW SITUATION: An armed person (e.g. with a knife) approaches you. You have nothing to use to your defense. WHAT TO DO: Step back and quickly grab your attacker's arm (the one holding the knife) and position your free hand on his hip. Swing your body toward the direction of the attack. Use your attacker's momentum to put him off balance. WORD OF CAUTION: If your attacker has a gun, it is best not to fight back. You can also do a follow-up by kicking your attacker. But believe me, nothing beats a good run. B. THE SHOULDER THROW SITUATION: An unarmed man bear hugs you from behind. You can't move as your hands are enclosed in his. WHAT TO DO: Distract your attacker by stepping on his foot. Move your body downward and simultaneously lock your hand on his armpit. Pull your attacker downward.
