 West Virginia University Sigma Alpha
Chapter History

The interest in starting an agriculturally-oriented sorority came from a few of the young ladies who initially joined the SID.  The need was felt for a sorority for the young ladies involved in agriculture and natural resource areas of study at West Virginia University.  They had witnessed the benefit of such an organization from the brothers of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho at the university.

The initial contact with Sigma Alpha Sorority’s National Board was made by Quinton Jones.  He was serving as an officer of Alpha Gamma Rho at the University and happened to have met Dana Hamilton of Sigma Alpha at an earlier point in time.  Jeff McCutcheon joined him in his interest in assisting the young ladies at the University in establishing a chapter.  Deanna Poole and Lisa McClain were the first young ladies to begin working to establish a chapter.  Support was was also given freely from the College of Agriculture and Forestry.  Both Dr. Edna McBreen and College Dean Robert Maxwell were more than happy to assist in any way that they could to make a home for Sigma Alpha at West Virginia University.  Dr. Edna McBreen later became the first Faculty Advisor for the Chi Chapter.

The first meetings of the future SID were held on December 10, 1992 and January 13, 1993.  These first two meetings were merely informational in nature to promote the idea of establishing a chapter.  Then on January 29, 1993 Dana Hamilton, SID Coordinator of the Sigma Alpha National Board joined with interested young ladies to discuss the history of the sorority and how they could go about establishing a SID chapter.  Nineteen ladies were in attendance for that meeting, held in the Agricultural Sciences Building.  From this meeting, the ladies took all information that was offered and began working on the establishment of a chapter.

The Chi Chapter of Sigma Alpha  was chartered on January 15, 1994. The charter members of the Chi Chapter are as follows: (in order of pin number and official activation signature)

Lisa McClain, Julie Baldizar, Jennifer Cannella, Autumn Carrozza, Stephanie Demchik, Keeri Dumm, Michelle Goodwin, Saundra Harris, Mercy Heath, Gwen Hedrick, Heather Ireland, Maureen Kenyon, Alecia Larew, Marie Maiuro, Michelle Payne, Deanna Poole, Michelle Prigge, Amy Riggleman, Jeanine Wagoner, Shannon Warren, and Candy Zacot.

The activation ceremony was held in the Agricultural Sciences Building.  We met at 9:00 a.m. to learn more about Sigma Alpha and the ceremony that we would soon experience.  After lunch, we all took exams and then headed home to get ready for the 5:00 p.m. ceremony and formal to follow.  Once we had all been inducted into Sigma Alpha, at 7:15 p.m. we headed downtown to the Hotel Morgan for our celebration dinner and formal.  At midnight, following the formal, everyone headed to the Alpha Gamma Rho house for a party held in our honor.  Our special event was further celebrated through receiving a basket of flowers from the brothers of AGR, and both flowers and balloons from the sisters of the Delta Chapter.  Special note: All persons invited to the black tie celebration dinner and dance received a formal invitation that was hand addressed in calligraphy by Charter Member Kerri Dumm.

The WVU Sigma Alpha Alumni Chapter was chartered on December 15, 1994. Since then, the alumni members of WVU Sigma Alpha have participated in many activities and projects with their active chapter counterparts.

The sisters of WVU Sigma Alpha Alumni meet on a semi-annual basis at the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences. All WVU Sigma Alpha Alumni and Active Chapter members are welcome to attend.
