Vincent Kartheiser Talks About Alaska
Teen Machine
TM Magazine

Q: In Alaska, you seem to do a lot of really dangerous things, like hang off cliffs and fall down mountains. How much of the stunts did you actually do?

Vincent: I did all of my stunts but 3. All of the stuff on the mountain with climbing was me. I'm a mountain climber myself. All the swimming of the rapids was me. The falling down the mountain, I'd say, about half is me.

Q: Did you have any time to prepare for the physical challenges?

Vincent: About a month before filming began, I went up there with Thora. We went and saw the bear, and met some mountain climbers and learned to kayak. So for about a month we were like 'What are we going to do today?' They'd say 'Today, you're going to sea kayak, or learn to rappel off a 350ft cliff. It was very fun.'

Q: Were you afraid to do any of the stunts?

Vincent: The only stunt I was afraid of (because I'm from Minnesota, so rolling down snow-capped mountains is easy) but I was afraid of whitewater swimming the first time I did it. The main reason because it was so cold. It was glacier water like 90 below, and I would have a wet suit on and everything, but i would only be in there for 15 seconds. They'd film a short cut of me going up and under and I'd go around the corner, and 8 stunt guys would grab me out of the water. My lips would be blue, and i'd be shaking. Then they'd say, 'let's do it again!'

Q: What was it like working with the polar bear, Agee?

Vincent: The polar bear was very cool. I loved Agee. We got along very well. We met her a month before filming and wed go back once or twice a week, and go on walks with her. No one could touch the polar bear but us. On my off times, i'd go and ask the trainer 'can she play?' Me and Agee would kinda kick back on the beach old school and just do a little of the 'ol play time. (laughs) But I liked her a lot. I kinda miss her. I see her (in the movie) and go awwwwww!

Q: What was it like seeing the finished movie Alaska?

Vincent: Its really hard watching myself. But the movie's really good. It's like anything, if you watch yourself on home video it's like 'Arrrgh! Do I really make those expressions?

Q: What do you do for fun when you are not working?

Vincent: I play pool. I play basketball-I'm not real competitive. I just like to go down to the court and shoot around. I mountain climb. I do crosswords. I'm also on home school, so I do alot of homework.

Q: You have a background in theatre. Do you want to go back to the stage or are you planning to stick with movies?

Vincent: I love theatre and I want to go back, but I am kinda enthralled with this right now. Movies are a very different kind of acting for me. It's something I'm very interested in pursuing. It's kind of like I've started a ball rolling up a mountain, and I've got to keep pushing or else it will fall back down.
