A Fresh New Face for 2000

Vincent Kartheiser, actor, "Crime and Punishment in Suburbia" (United Artist)

It's been almost eight years since 20-year-old thesp Vincent Kartheiser got a blink-and-you'll-miss part in the Christian Slater pie "Untamed Heart." Finally, with meaty roles under his belt in 1998's "Another Day in Paradise" and this year's Sundance sleeper "Crime and Punishment in Suburbia," he is beginning to get noticed by industry insiders.

"I got such a big rush out of playing Tiny Tim in `A Christmas Carol' on stage when I was 7 that I knew this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life," recalls the Minneapolis-born Kartheiser.

In helmer Rob Schmidt's "Crime and Punishment in Suburbia," a contemporary version of Dostoyevsky's novel set in the suburbs of L.A., Kartheiser plays the male version of Sonia, Raskolnikov's moral savior. "I identified with this character, because I was abused by the jocks and the popular guys when I was in high school."

Next up for the intense young actor is "Beauty Loop," a film about sex and college life, in which he plays a musician, and co-stars with Minnie Driver and Rufus Sewell.
