Biometrics

Changing How the World Looks At Security

Fingerprints, Handprints, Face Recognition, Eye Scans The word "biometrics" is derived from the Greek words bios and metrons, and can be translated into the phrase "measure of life". Biometrics is the study of automated methods for recognizing people based upon one or more of their unique, "built-in" physical or behavioral traits. Biometric authentication is used in information technology to measure and investigate these traits. Some examples of physical characteristics that are measured would be fingerprints, the retinas and irises of the eyes, facial patterns, and hand measurements. Signature, how a person walks, and typing patterns are examples of behavioral characteristics that are used in authentication. Voice is also used, but it is considered a combination of physical and behavioral characteristics.
Devices that are used include fingerprint scanners, eye scanners, voice recognition systems, and digital cameras. As you probably figured out, the fingerprint scanners scan fingerprints, and the eye scanners scan either the retina or the iris, depending on the type of scanner. Voice recognition is done through a microphone, and digital cameras are used to take pictures of eyes.
