Charya Burt is a graduate and former dance faculty member of the University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Her training began in 1982 under the direction of the foremost d ance masters of Cambodia. As a member of Cambodia's royal dance troupe, she traveled to China and North Korea. An expert in traditional male and female roles and folk dance, Charya has performed throughout the United States, including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Jacob's Pillow Festival at U.C.L.A., the Asia Fest Monoa in Honolulu, the opening of the new Getty Center in Los Angeles, and six times as a featured dancer at the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. For the 2000-1 season, Charya received the prestigious Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Achievement in Individual Performance.

 

A recipient of several California Arts Council grants, including the Exemplary Arts Program and the Traditional Folk Arts Program, Charya was also awarded the 2002 California DanceMaker Grant to create "The Magic Peacocks," a dance piece based on a traditional folk dance which fuses
Western instrumentation with Cambodian melodies. Charya has conducted dance workshops at several colleges and universities around the country including the California State University Summer Arts Program at California State University, Long Beach. In 1999, Charya received a B. A., Cum Laude, in Liberal Studies from Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California. Additionally, she has earned 32 post graduate units in the Teaching Credential Program at Sonoma State. Charya currently teaches dance to Cambodian students in the Santa Rosa Cambodian Community.
