B A C K G R O U N D
In preceding years, meetings at the Joint Chiropractic Liaison Committee level (Chiropractic task team which reports to the relevant Council) and Kwazulu Natal Regional level with respect to Chiropractic Internship matters, the begining of 2000 heralded the birth to the Kwazulu-Natal Regional Internship Program Committee. This committee was designed to give input to the National Internship Committee and resultantly the Chiropractors, Homoeopaths and Allied Health Services Professions Interim Council on aspects affecting the Internship specifically in Kwazulu-Natal.
In congruence with this the Chiropractors, Homoeopaths and Allied Health Professions Interim Council, passed legislation with repect to the Internship Programme for Chiropractic students and practitioners in early 2001. This legislation amongst other things made provision for the period of one year's Internship for Chiropractic students.
The Internship Programme has been successful in implementaing a viable "Work Experience Program", in terms of the following components:
1. The servicing of rural hospitals in the greater Kwazulu - Natal region.
2. The servicing of the community of the Durban Metro Region, by means the
Chiropractic Day Clinic based at Technikon Natal.
3. The servicing of various Sporting Fraternities within the greater Durban and
Pietermarizburg Regions
4. The provision of public education talks (primarily schools and industry)
5. Exciting new prospects are being explored for further student involvement and
collaboration with other health care professionals.
The Internship Programme has been successful in implementaing a viable "Academic (CPD) Program", in terms of the following components:
1. The development of a Chiropractic Students' Congress
2. The development of an interactive forum, whereby students present their research,
patient cases and discuss topics with experts drawn from various fields.
Although the legislation provides for a period of one year's internship, negotiations with Council has allowed for a gradual build up towards a full year's Internship over a period of 5 - 10 years.
