James Alfred Wood was born on 29 July 1887 at 19 Chatham Hill, Chatham. He was the sixth of the thirteen Wood children, and stayed behind in Britain when his parents emigrated to Canada in 1905. Within the family, he was known as Alf.

During WW1, served in the British Army, with the Coldstream Guards. Seriously wounded but survived. Emigrated to Canada after the war. Lived on Main St, Winnipeg.

Was one five sons still living when his mother Charlotte died in 1939.
The house where Alf was born (No.19 Chatham Hill) no longer exists. It used to stand on the right side of the road, where the telegraph pole stands in the above photo.
