| WHAT WE PROVIDE |
Games and Activities: basketball, football, frisbee, pool, air hockey, foosball, ping-pong, dodgeball, kickball; paper crafts (airplanes, decorations, origami); web page design instruction and assistance; games (chess, checkers, bingo, dominoes, cards, yahtzee, playstation one, darts, curling, shuffleboard, Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit and many others); puzzles; tournaments (pool, chess, dominoes, ping-pong, foosball, air hockey); contests and much more Special Events: Parties; movie nights; dinners; contests; and many others Other Programs: Fit for Life, Pizza-N-Books, Safe Kids, Drug and Alcohol Programs, academic assistance (tutoring, computers made available for homework and research, homework help); and more Snacks: healthy snacks (carrots, apples, bananas, grapes, veggie pizza, etc.) are provided from 3:00 to 3:45 during the school year and between 2:00 and 2:30 during the summer; a more substantial meal (tacos, chicken dishes, stew, chili, etc.) is provided daily at 5 p.m. during the school year and at 12:00 p.m. during the summer. Respect: everyone is treated fairly; no one's past behavior is held against them and particpants are dealt with according to their current behaviors at Charlie's Place; past behaviors and reputed behaviors are not an issue; consequences are dealt out according to behavior, not how much trouble participants have or have not been in before; participants are given opportunities to 'work off' warnings in order to avoid further consequences Safety and Supervision: there are usually at least 3 staff members on duty while Charlie's Place is open; conflicts and concerns are mediated or otherwise dealt with promptly; participants with specific concerns may speak one-on-one with staff members if they wish to; parents' concerns are always taken seriously and will be dealt with promptly Committees: particpants are encouraged to take part in running Charlie's Place by serving on committees; they can help plan menus, create shopping lists (for food and for supplies), plan future activities and programs, and make decisions about what is offered/provided by Charlie's Place; all participants must take turns serving on the clean-up committee Structure: there are sign up sheets and rules of conduct for the more popular games and activities (playstation use, computer use, music use, pool table use) and there is a set 'quiet time' (during the school year) when Charlie's Place first opens during which participants can complete homework assignments, play quiet games or just relax and hang out |
