The McWH*RTER/MacWH*RTER CLAN was associated with the BUCHANAN CLAN in Scotland. They were associated, but seperate, and they had their own tartan and crest.
McWh*rter/MacWh*rter is derived from MacCHRUITER. The meaning of MacCHRUITER is "Son of the Harper." This was a very important hereditary post in the highlands. In 1346, Kind David, II of Scotland granted Patrick M'CHURTEER land. Patrick was the son of the Harper of Carrick.
