Charles Pitts and Rebecca (Hammer) McWhirter


    Charles Pitts McWHIRTER, born in 1844, Wilson County, Tennessee, son of Charles and Nancy (GRIFFIN) McWHIRTER. He died April 1907, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. They are buried in Martin Cemetery.
    Pitts married Rebecca HAMMER 12 Sep 1861, Marion County, Illinois. She was born Apr 1847, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of Wiley and Ellender (HULTZ) HAMMER. She died 1921 and is buried in Martin Cemetery, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
    Rebecca's family also came from Wilson County, Tennessee. Her father was born in Wilson County, son of John and Nancy (GARNER) HAMMER. John was born 1793/94 in North Carolina. Nancy was the daughter of John Nance and Susannah (HALLA) GARNER of North Carolina. John Nance was the son of John Garner, a Revolutionary War soldier of Virginia. He was from England.
    They lived in section 34 of Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, where they had 100 acres. Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln, signed the deed to the property. The first 40 acres NE 1/4 SE 1/4 cost $200.00. He also had SW 1/2 SE 1/4, 60 acres. He bought NW 1/4 SE 1/4, acreage not known. They were very close to Tonti Township line. Their house was south of Greenridge Road, just west of Greenridge School and Greenridge Baptist Church (which is located at Greenridge Road and Bilek Road). The old Baptist Church has been tore down and the school was turned into a non-denominational church.
    Pitts was a farmer and he and his family belonged to the Greenridge Baptist Church.
    On 26 Jul 1870, the census shows C. P. (28) and Rebecca (24) McWHORTERS was living in Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Edward age 7; and Mabel age 3. It shows that Pitts was born in Tennessee and that Rebecca and the children were born in Illinois.
    On 22 Jun 1880, the census shows Chas. P. (36) and Rebecca (30) McQUIRTER living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Mattie A. age 15; Eddie age 17; Lillie age 12; Amanda age 9; Charles age 5; George age 3,and twins Minnie and Bennie age 6 months. It shows that Pitts and both parents were born in Tennessee. It shows that Rebecca and both parents were born in Illinois. All children born in Illinois. Pitts was a farmer.
    On 14 May 1887, Charles P. McWHIRTER purchased 04N 02E in Section 34 of Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
    On 21 Jun 1900, the census shows Pit and Rebecca McWHIRTER living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Also with them was their daughter Cora age 16. The census shows that Rebecca had given birth to 10 children with only 7 still living at time of census. Pitts was a farmer.
    On 2 May 1907, C. P. McWHIRTER's Proof of Death has, "State of Illinois Marion County} Rebecca McWHIRTER being duly sworn, deposeth and sayeth that C. P. McWHIRTER, late of the town of Foster, in the County of Marion and State aforesaid, departed this life at his home in said County, on or about the 17th day of April A.D. 1907, and that he died leaving no last will and testament to the best of her knowledge and belief. (Signed by Rebecca McWHIRTER) Subscribed and sworn before me this 2nd day of May A.D. 1907. (Signed by J. R. QUAYLE, Clerk).

    On 3 Jun 1909 & 1 Jul 1909, The Republican (Salem, Marion County, Illinois) has, "NOTICE OF FINAL SETTLEMENT. Estate of C. P. McWHIRTER, deceased. Notice is hereby given to the heirs of said deceased, Martha SPROUSE, Belle WILLIAMS, Amanda WILLIAMS, Maggie BASSETT, Cora WRIGHT, Charles McWHIRTER, Richard McWHIRTER, that I the undersigned will on the First Monday in July, 1909 apply to the County Court of Marion county, Illinois, and make my final report and ask the same to be approved, and by discharge of such administratrix. Rebecca McWHIRTER, Administratix of C. P. McWHIRTER, dec'd. By T. E. MERRITT, her attorney. Dated May 31, 1909."
    On 28 Apr 1910, the census shows the widowed Rebecca McWHIRTER age 62, living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. With her was her sister Amanda DEAM . Amanda's first husband was John F. THOMAS, whom she married 31 Jul 1866. The census shows that Rebecca had given birth to 11 children and that only 7 were still living.

Pitts and Rebecca had eleven children. The name of one child is not known.

Edward “Edd” McWHIRTER, born 1861, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, son of Charles Pitts and Rebecca (HAMMER) McWHIRTER (See above). He died 1897, Marion County, Illinois. He is buried in Martin Cemetery next to his parents.
    Edd married 1st Frances E. “Fannie” HEADLEY 1 May 1887, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. She was born 1869/70, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of Eli and Sarah HEADLEY.
    Edd married 2nd the widow Seneth Helen “Nellie” (GARNER) BLURTON 24 Sep 1889, Marion County, Illinois. He was 26 and she was 23 when they married. Nellie was born 31 Dec 1866, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of Calvin and Jemima Jane (ARNOLD) GARNER. She died 1 Jan 1943, Salem, Marion County, Illinois. She is buried in Martin Cemetery next to her third husband.
    Nellie married 3rd to James McDonald EAGAN 22 Sep 1898, Marion County, Illinois. She was 36 and he was 31 when they married. They had children: Marinda Jane EAGAN (Mrs. John Leslie McWhirter), born Jul 1899 (See Chapter 9, #5 for this family); Carrie Belle EAGAN (Mrs. Samuel PHILLIPS) born 1901, Harry “BUD” EAGAN born 1904 (Go to James S. McWhirter for this family.) and Venice Rhea “Venie” EAGAN (Mrs. Thomas DONOHO) born 1904. James McDonald was the son of Abraham W. and Marinda (WHITSON) EAGAN. Abraham was the son of Barnaby, III and Deborah (WHITSON) EAGAN.
    Nellie had two sons by her first marriage to Philip BLURTON. They were William BLURTON, born Jan 1885 and Cal BLURTON, born Mar 1888.
    On 20 Jun 1900, the census shows James (38) and Mollie (33) EAGON living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. (Note: Mollie, of course, is Nellie.) With them was their daughter Merindia EAGON born Jul 1899. Also with them were Nellie's two sons by her first marriage William BLERTEN born Jan 1885; and Cal BLERTEN born Mar 1888. Also with them was Nellie's daughter by her 2nd marriage Cleade McGUARTER born Jul 1890. Nellie's son, Edward was living with Martha WAITE, who lived next to Edward's uncle, Charley McWHIRTER. (See #5 following) Edward was listed as the step-son of Martha, which he was not.

Edward "Eddie" "Tater" McWHIRTER, Jr., born 9 Jun 1895, son of Edward “Edd” & Seneth Helen “Nellie” (GARNER)(BLURTON) McWHIRTER. He died 27 Jun 1961.
    Eddie married Sarah Josephine "Josie" Sullens 30 Mar 1920. He was 24 and she was 16 when they married. She was born 18 Nov 1903, daughter of Willard and Lockie (WILLIAMS) SULLENS. Lockie was the daughter of Elijah "Lige" and Sarah J. (WHITSON) WILLIAMS. Josie died 30 Oct 1969.
    On 19 Jun 1900, Edward McGUARTER age 4, is listed in the Martha WAITE home in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. He was listed as her step-son. I don't know why. They were all listed next to Edward's uncle, Charley McWHIRTER, who is also listed as McGUARTER.
    On 25 Apr 1910, the census shows Eddie McWHIRTER age 14, living with his mother and step-father, James M. and Nellie EAGAN in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
    Eddie served in the II Pvt Co D lO3 Machine Gun BN United States Services in World War 1.
    On 10 Apr 1930, the census shows Eddie (34) and Josephine S. (26) McWHIRTER living in Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois. Also living with them was their son Lester McWHIRTER age 8. They were renting their home. Eddie was a farm laborer.
    On 4 Jan 1934, the Centralia Sentinel has "Alma Hospitality Day...Edward McWHIRTER is the police officer."

    Lester married Kathyrn SHANAFELT 29 Jun 1941, Salem, Marion County, Illinois. She was born 1921/22, Salem, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of Isaac E. and Pearl M. (___?___) SHANAFELT. Kathyrn‘s sister married Ace WIGGINS.
    On 6 Apr 1944, the Kinmundy Express has, "The following have been asked to report to the Salem Selective Service for their pre-induction examination: Thomas L. GREEN, Roscoe Raymond OLDEN, Beryl F. LINTON, Ralph Wade LUX, Charles Elmer BERRY of Kinmundy, Lester McWHIRTER and James OSBORNE of Alma.     On 7 Dec 1944, the Kinmundy Express has, "Pvt. Lester McWHIRTER of Alma is enjoying a 15 day furlough from Wyoming with homefolks".
    He was an athlete in high school.
    Lester served in World War 2 going into service in Apr 1944.
    Lester was a member of the Masonic Hall. He was a railroader and was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was a member of the Kinmundy Masonic Lodge 398 and the Scottish Rite of Belleville.
    They were Methodists.

Marvin is the son of James BASSETT, son of LaFayette BASSETT (See Chapter 14 of the Bassett Family), who is the brother of Elmer BASSETT (See Chapter 15 of the Bassett Family).

    Lori married 2nd Donald Thomas "Tom" SMITH Saturday, 16 Oct 2004, Kalkaska, Michigan, by Tom's father, Rev. Donald Walter SMITH of Flint, Mischigan. Rev. SMITH is a minister and works for Homeland Security. Tom's mother is Rhonda Leight (OVERBY) SMITH. She lives in Texas.
    Lorri is a graduate of Central Michigan University.

    Mattie married 1st Isaac Benjamin F. GRAVES 20 Jun 1880, Marion County, Illinois by Peter M Green, M. G. He was born 15 Ju1 1862, son of Isaac and Sarah E. (MALONE) GRAVES. Sarah (MALONE) GRAVES was the daughter of John and Eveline MALONE. Isaac died 1 Mar 1898. Buried at Martin Cemetery.
    Mattie married 2nd Isaac A. A. SPROUSE (as his 3rd wife) 27 Feb 1900. She was 34 and he was 51 when they married. He was born Apr 1848, Walnut Hill, Marion County, Illinois. Isaac died Mar 1914.
    Isaac GRAVES served in the Civil War, Co., E, 62nd IL Inf.
    On 23 Feb 1900, the Kinmundy Express has, "I. A. SPOUSE, postmaster of Alma, and Miss Mattie GRAVES will be married next Thursday."
    On 5 Jun 1900, the census shows Isaac A. (52) and Mattie (36) SPROUSE living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. With them were his children Robert age 16; Cora A. age 15; Earl age 13;and Stella age 9. Also with them were her childre Noble age 18; Noah C. age 15; Norman age 13; Nova A. age 7; and Nona age 6.     On 16 Apr 1910, the census shows Mattie SPROUSE age 45, living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. With her were her children Norman GRAVES age 23; Nova GRAVES age 18; and Nona GRAVES age 15. Also living with her was a border James LEWIS age 23. Also living with her was her son-in-law Edward FOX age 25. (Note: Nona had already married Edward, but her name was listed as Graves in the census.) Mattie was listed as a dressmaker. Edward was a brakeman on the railroad. James was also a railroader. Mattie had given birth to 6 children with only 4 living at time of census. They lived on Railroad Street in Alma.
    On 25 Jul 1912, the Kinmundy Express has, "Tuesday evening Mrs. I. A. SPROUSE, of Alma, in company with 2 other parties, started to drive out west of Alma, and when the vehicle started to go down the Bob Malone hill, the horse they were driving took fright and started to run. Mrs. SPROUSE jumped from the buggy and in doing so dislocated one arm and broke one limb above the ankle. The other two occupants remained in the buggy and were unhurt."
    On 19 Jan 1920, the census shows Martha SPROUSE age 52, living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. With her was her grandson Cecil GRAVES age 18. Cecil was a farm laborer.
    On 11 Apr 1930, the census shows Mattie SPROUSE age 65, living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. Living with her were two roomers Stanford LASATER age 67; and Alvin SUTHERS age 58. All there listed as widowed. Mattie's home was valued at $2,500.00.

2-1. Noble GRAVES, born 12 May 1882, Illinois. He died 19 Dec 1907. He is buried in Martin Cemetery.
    Noble married Nettie BASS 28 Nov 1900, Marion County, Illinois. He was 19 and she was 16 when they married. She was born in 1884. He is buried in Martin Cemetery.
    Nettie married 2nd to Richard McWHIRTER 31 Mar 1911, Marion County, Illinois. She was 26 and he was 33 when they married. (See #6 following) She had three children with Richard.
    On 6 Apr 1911, the Kinmundy Express has, "McWHERTER-GRAVES: On the evening of Friday, March 31, 1911, at the home of W.H. BASS and wife in this city, occurred the marriage of his daughter, Mrs. Nettie GRAVES, of Alma, and Mr. Richard McWHERTER of Fayette Co., Rev. J.W. RITCHEY, pastor of the Presbyterian Church performing the ceremony. They will make their home in Fayette county where the groom is in business."

    On 14 Apr 1930, the census shows Cecil A. (28) and Alice (28) GRAVES living in Champaign, Illinois. They owned their home. It was valued at $4,000.00. They owned a radio. Cecil was a driver for a Dry Cleaning business.
    Cecil was living with his Grandmother Mattie in 1920.

    On 23 Apr 1910, the census shows Noah (25) and Edna (26) GRAVES living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their chldren Fridah age 5; and Georgia age 4. Noah was a farmer.
    On 19 Jan 1920, the census shows Noah C. (35) and Edna B. (36) GRAVES living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Freeda age 15; and Georgia age 14. Noah was a brakeman for the railroad.
    On 16 Apr 1930, the census shows Noah (45) and Edna B. (46) GRAVES living at Homan Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. With them was their daughter Georgia STEVENS age 24 and her husband Paul B. STEVENS age 25. They were all renting. Georgia had been married for less than a year. Noah was a machinist at a screw factory. Paul was a architectural designer. Paul was born in North Dakota.
    On 12 Dec 1946, the Kinmundy Express has, "Mrs. Edna GRAVES, 63, of Champaign, died Monday at Burnham City Hospital. Death followed a year’s illness with heart disease. Services were held from the Mittendorf Funeral Home. She was born Aug. 20, 1883 at Alma, daughter of Charles and Bertha HARVEY, and married to Noah GRAVES on Feb. 10, 1904. She leaves her husband and 2 children, Mrs. Paul STEVENS of Chicago, and Mrs. O. E. THOMPSON of Bellingham, Wash.; one grandson, Paul STEVENS of Chicago, and 1 sister, Mrs. Mabel GROTTS of Olympia, Wash. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery in Urbana."

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman GRAVES, former residents of Alma, but for the past 15 years have made their home in Champaign. She is a graduate of the Champaign High School and at the time of her marriage, was doing factory work. The groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison EAGAN, residing just north of the C. & E. I. Lake. For the past several months, he has been employed in an ice cream factory in Champaign. They will make their home in Champaign."

Ora E. "Doc" McWHIRTER, born 29 Dec 1903, Illinois, son of Richard C. and Laura J. (BOAZ) McWHIRTER. He died 20 Oct 1979. Last place of residence was Vandalia, Fayette County, Illinois.
    Doc married 1st Vallene "Vallie" CEARLOCK. She was the daughter of Edward "Ed" and Mary Elizabeth (HICKS) CEARLOCK. Vallie died shortly after giving birth to Donald, their only child. She was about 18 years of age.
    Doc married 2nd Marjorie SMITH 12 Oct 1935, Vandalia, Fayette County, Illinois. She was born 14 Jun 1910, Hagarstown, Illinois. She died 14 January 1991, Chandler, Arizona.
    Doc owned a garage in Vandalia. (Note: My mother, Monna (CONANT) FRAKES, took my grandmother, Grace (BASSETT) CONANT, up there for a visit once and she remembers the garage.)
    Whe Marjorie died, the only child mentioned was her step-son, Donald.

6-3-1. Donald McWHIRTER, born Jan 1924, Fayette County, Illinois.
    On 10 Apr 1930, the census shows Edward (60) and Mary E. (60) CEARLOCK living in Sugar Grove Township, Kane County, Illinois. They and their parents were both said to have been born in Illinois. Edward was a farmer. They were renting their home. With them was their grandson, Donald age 6, born Illinois.
    Donald lived with his maternal grandparents until their deaths circa 1935. He then lived with his father and step-mother.
    In 1991, at the time of Donald's stepmother's death, he was living in Oak View, California.

Cora "Corie" McWHIRTER, born Sep 1883, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. She died Jun 1977, Peoria, Illinois. She was in her 90's when she died.
    Cora married 1st Samuel WRIGHT 23 Jul 1901, Marion County, Illinois. She was 17 and he was 22 when they married. He was born 5 Jan 1879, son of James Thomas and Talitha W. (JONES) WRIGHT. Samuel died Jul 1968, Peoria, Illinois.
    On 22 Apr 1910, the census shows Sam (31) and Cora (25) WRIGHT living with Cora's brother, Richard McWHIRTER, in Sharon Township, Fayette County, Illinois. Sam was listed as a farmer.
    Cora married 2nd William CEILING.
    Cora married 3rd Levi GIBSON. She had one child. Levi had a son from a previous marriage who married Ruth WRIGHT. (See Chapter 13, #5-4)
    Aunt Cora was a really nice lady. I remember her visiting us when I was a teenager. She loved to fish. She would use the old time bamboo pole with a hook and cork. I have a photo of her sitting on the ground, on the dam by our pond in Foster Township fishing. She had one of those old time bonnets on. The photo was taken of her in 1974 when she was visiting us in Foster Township. She was sitting on the dam by the pond.

Son of Samuel and Cora (McWHIRTER) WRIGHT:

11-1. Norval WRIGHT, born 15 May 1902, Illinois. He died Dec 1966, Peoria, Illinois.
    He was hit and killed by a car while working a crosswalk for children leaving school. (Note: I'm not sure if this was father or son.)
    On 10 Apr 1930, the census shows Norval (28) and Isabelle (27) WRIGHT living at 301 Second Street, Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois. With them was their son, Norval WRIGHT, Jr. age 5 years and 1 month. They were renting their home at $30.00 a month. They owned a radio. He was a laborer at the steel plant.

    Son of Norval and Isabelle (___?___) WRIGHT:

    10-1-1. Norval WRIGHT, Jr., born 1925, Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois.
   Norval was a policeman.
    There is a plaque dedicated to him in Peoria, Illinois, where he died.
