C. S. Lewis (1865-1963)

C.S. Lewis is one of the Christian world's most beloved writers.  His mastery of prose, keen intellect, and ability to formulate pursuasive arguments has had a great influence on me as a scholar and has been equally inspiring as a writer.  It is difficult to calculate the significance C.S. Lewis has had on the Christian community as a whole, but in a recent Christian History issue that listed the ten most influential Christians of the 20th century, Lewis was near or at the top in almost all categories -- from laymen to academics.

Oddly though, there are many Christians who are unaware of Lewis' breadth of writing -- most know him principally for his Narnia books, or perhaps Mere Christianity, but are unfamiliar with his work in apologetics, such as The Abolition of Man, and what many consider his best work, Till We Have Faces.

Above all, Lewis was a man of integrity.  In his writing, in his life, in his teaching -- he "walked the walk."  He was imperfect as are we all, but his life was a heart-wrenching and inspiring testimonial about the importance of faith and the enduring power of Christ's love.

The following public domain document is collection of letters Lewis wrote to a skeptic:

Three Letters by Lewis

You can find out more about C.S. Lewis on the web, at "Into the Wardrobe," (link below) or by buying any one of his books.  Personally, I recommend Surprised by Joy, Miracles, The Problem of Pain, Till We Have Faces, and Mere Christianity.  There is also a film about his later years, called Shadowlands.  For more information, see Into the Wardrobe or the C.S. Lewis Foundation.
