John Bunyan (1628-1688)

 

John Bunyan was a 17th Century English Puritan, poet, writer and preacher who was jailed for 12 years for his dissention from the Church of England.

Bunyan bears some resemblance to Chesterton, in that neither of them belonged to the academy, and yet they both possessed literary and intellectual brilliance that far exceeded most of their contemporary academics.

Macaulay has called Bunyan "a living concordance" in reference to his extensive and comprehensive understanding of the Bible. Surprisingly, he began his career as an illiterate tinker, and while in jail had access to only two books: the Bible and Fox's Book of Martyrs. Despite these challenges, Bunyan went on to become one of the most influential Christians of his time ... and of all time.
